Revolutionary Road, January 2009

Time is ticking down until the Oscars in February 2009. The movie club decided we need to try and see a few movies before the big event, and they had to be after the announcement of nominees. Revolutionary Road was selected after the Golden Globes. Kate Winslet won a golden globe for her role in Revolutionary Road (although did not receive an Academy Award nomination) and because of the great cast which also includes Leonardo DiCaprio and Kathy Bates this would be a good film. And it was! This film is not for the weak hearted. It is heavy in social content, and at times hits a bit to close to home. Why do we all settle for suburban life, and give up our twenty-something dreams for the 9to5 work-day and a piece of the American dream? It is about a couple’s journey that ends in tragedy. The uniqueness of this film is that it really feels as if you are watching live theater instead of film. The director, Sam Mendes cinematography is raw and exposed and it feels like you are looking into the past seeing things that you don’t really want to believe are true. Every married couple should see this film just for the fact that it makes you feel better about your own circumstances, and when exiting the movie you feel as if you just escaped a bad dream.
