Designers are just as excited for spring as we are, and they’re showing it by printing everything with bold colors and bright florals! These days, it’s just about impossible to go into a store without seeing big, beautiful prints. What better time to celebrate spring than when the fashions for it are at their peak? This season, whether your print is subtle or vibrant, don’t be afraid of big prints! They are large, loud, and perfectly in fashion.
Below are some of my favorite printed pieces from all over the Row. If you don’t love any of these, don’t worry! There are a ton more great pieces here at Santana Row that are just waiting for you to take them home!

Anthropologie: “Bursting Sweetshade Dress” - $188.

Vera Bradley: “Laptop Portfolio in Island Blooms” - $82. (Vera Bradley’s whole business is based on bright floral patterns. Everything from purses and luggage to reading glasses and notepaper is printed with a wide assortment of colors and flowers. Check them out here at Santana Row!)

Chico’s: “Tribal Blues Gloria Tank” - $59.00

Anthropologie: “Paused Movements Skirt” - $128.

Loft: “Bubble Dot Print Flutter Shell” - $54.50 (How cute it this top with this skirt?)
Forget spring! Are you already waiting for summer? I know I am! This year, don’t be afraid to go bold with beachwear. Pastels and monotones are out… Prints are in!

Tommy Bahama: “Banana Leaf Embellished Tunic” - $126.

Ted Baker: “CALIOP” (top) - $65.

Ted Baker: “ERIO” (bottom) - $65

Santana Row has a great selection of chunky sweaters for you to choose from, whether you are looking for one a little more sophisticated or are just in the market for a cute and comfy sweater! Below are some of my favorite chunky sweaters from around the Row. (It was so hard to choose my favorites because there are so many great ones!) Enjoy!

Free People: “Laguna Coast Pullover” - $98.00

No Resolution? No Problem!
Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution that I am not going to keep, this year I have decided to just not make one! Maybe you are like me and have decided to not bother. But just because we haven’t made a resolution doesn’t mean that we can’t start the year off right! There are lots of places at Santana Row that can help you get a positive jumpstart to your 2012.
Maybe all you need is a day at the spa to clear your head and get you in the mood to make the most of your New Year. At Santana Row, we have several places that can help you accomplish just that. Burke Williams is famous for their excellent services and day spa. InSpa is known for offering good services for their competitive prices. Sometimes the best way to rejuvenate yourself is to be spontaneous and try something new. Atelier Aveda Spa and Salon is a great place for a brand new cut and color. Or, let yourself splurge a little and buy some new pieces that make you feel great. When you feel great, others notice!
Organization can play a big role in refreshing your life. When your space is organized, so is your mind! The Container Store knows this, and is therefore offering 30% off of all elfa products until February 13th. elfa is a line of products designed to get your maximize your closet space, all while being the utmost organized! The elfa team at The Container Store will design you a new closet and give you 30% off of all products and installation! New Year, new closet! Antioxidants Can Be Found In The Most Unlikely Places
You've heard the word buzzing around: antioxidants. What are they, and why are they important to you?
Wikipedia's definition. in part, is: An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions in a cell, which can cause damage or death to the cell.
And that's not good for you. And damage to a cell can create conditions like premature wrinkling of the skin, or lead to cancer and heart disease.
While antioxidants can be found in some of the foods we consume, such as whole grains, fruits, coffee, red wine, and green tea, they are being used more often in the products we use on the outsides of our bodies as well.
Aveda products have included antioxidant extracts in their skin, hair, and makeup products for years. The idea being that what goes on the outside of your skin makes its way into your insides. Take lipstick, for instance. The average woman winds up ingesting quite a few tubes of lipstick over the course of a year, just by licking her lips, or eating a meal while wearing lipstick. So it makes good sense to make a lipstick out of ingredients that are good for you.
Those beneficial ingredients include: Vitamins C and E, green tea, and lycopene (tomato extract) among others. Another benefit of using antioxidants in makeup is their ability to act as a natural preservative, eliminating the need for chemicals.
Aveda's styling products also contain antioxidants to protect the hair's surface from the harmful effects of heat styling and even the rays of the sun.
All which add up to some darn good reasons to seek out antioxidants wherever you can find them. And it looks like they are easy to find if you know where to look.
Atelier Salonspa is located on the main street of Santana Row, near the corner of Olsen Dr. Our second salon, Atelier Studio, is having a major makeover, and will reopen in late January. Atelier offers hair, skin, and makeup services 7 days a week.

Last Minute Gift Ideas
Procrastination doesn’t end when you graduate from school, and the holidays are a perfect reminder of that. If you are still unsure of what to get someone (or everyone) on your list, don’t worry! Santana Row is the one-stop-shop place to find all of your holiday gifts. Whether the gifts are big or small, for men or women, for friends or loved ones, let us help you take some of the stress out of your holidays.
Here are some of my favorite gift ideas from around the Row for women:
Peet’s Coffee & Tea always has gift sets that are already prepared and are great for just about anyone, like the one below. After all, what woman doesn’t love chocolate? For a loved one or for someone you’ve just met, play it safe by getting her this Hot Cocoa Gift set from Peet’s! It includes the Dutch Cocoa mix, delicious marshmallows, and an adorable mug.

$21.95
Anthropologie is a great place for gifts for women and gifts for the home. From beautiful dresses to unique kitchenware to decadent candles, this store has it all. One of my favorite items currently in the store is their perfume collection called “A Rather Novel Collection”. The six perfumes are each created by a different perfumer and are inspired by different parts of the world. And what’s the best part? They all smell amazing! And because they all have different notes, one of them is bound to be just right for a woman in your life.

$48.00 each
Jest Jewels has accessories are both beautiful and unconventional at the same time… Perfect for that whimsical person in your life! Like Betsey Johnson’s “In the Navy Anchor” ring. So cute!

$45.00
We all know that men are trickier to shop for than women, so hopefully this will give you some ideas!
If your dad is like mine and is a little behind the technological times, maybe it’s time to get him on board. An iPod is a great way to do this. This way, he can have convenient access to all his favorite music, and it will be fun for you to bond over setting it up. Plus, Best Buy is offering a $30 gift card when you purchase an 8GB iPod Touch! (Feel free to keep that for yourself for being such a great gift giver!)

Best Buy: Apple iPod Touch 8GB - $199.99
Instead of getting the man in your life clothes this year… Oh, who are we kidding? Of course we’re going to get him clothes! It’s his fault for being impossible to shop for. At least Santana Row has lots of stores that will make him look and feel great in his new clothes. This jacket from Orvis is perfect for looking handsome while staying warm on those casual days out.

$399.00
Do you have a man in your life who loves cars? This wallet from Hlaska was actually made in conjunction with another store on Santana Row – Tesla. Can you guess why? The design on the wallet is actually the same tread design on Tesla tires. And since it’s made by Hlaska, you know it’s going to last.

$125.00
If you’re still unsure about what to get someone on your list, you can’t go wrong with the Santana Row Gift Card. This card is good at all Santana Row locations (stores, restaurants, spas and salons, the movie theater…) and since it’s so versatile, it’s the perfect gift for anyone! Some terms and exclusions apply. Cards may be purchased online at http://www.santanarow.com/concierge/giftcards/ or in the Santana Row Concierge.

Happy Holidays, and happy shopping!

Stress-Free Air Travel Tips from The Container Store
Headed home for the holidays? To ensure a streamlined security checkpoint experience, and to make the most of available packing space, we offer the following tips for becoming an organized air traveler.
Make a list of the things you need to pack, making sure you’re only taking along what you will absolutely need in order to reduce the number of bags you’ll need to take. Once you’re packed and ready to go, allow yourself ample time to get to the airport, taking into consideration such factors as traffic, weather and time of day. By arriving at the airport early, you can avoid the feeling of being rushed as you pass through security and will allow plenty of time to board the plane. Check with your airline or airport for estimates wait times at the security checkpoints. If checking bags, you may need to arrive earlier.
Don’t wrap any gifts before your trip — they may be unwrapped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents at the security checkpoint. Instead, wrap them after you arrive or pack a gift tote and tissue that you can easily assemble once you get to your destination.
You will be asked to provide government-issued photo identification at various checkpoints throughout the airport. In addition, passengers are required to provide proof of travel, including a boarding pass, or printed confirmation of an e-ticket. Keep all of these items organized and quickly accessible.
TSA guidelines limit carry-on baggage to one bag plus one personal item (i.e. purse, briefcase, laptop or backpack.) Some airlines have recently leveraged fees for checking bags or for checking more than one bag. Use a clothing compression system like the Pack-It System to make the most of the space. These items will also help expedite the security process, allowing security personnel to lift and sort through clothing, toiletries and shoes quickly and easily. The see-through mesh side panels allow for quick identification of the contents. Because garments are neatly folded and secured, putting items back into your luggage after passing through security is a snap.
Carry On
Don’t forget about TSA guidelines that require liquids, gels and aerosols that you want to carry on the plane be in three-ounce or smaller containers and in a one-quart, zip-top bag. It’s imperative to put shampoo, lotion, hair gel, toothpaste mouthwash and other liquids in guaranteed leakproof bottles to prevent spills. Visit www.tsa.gov for more details about these restrictions.

Q and A with Atelier
Jon asks: I need some grooming advice. I have little knowledge and even less patience when it comes to my hair. What is the quickest way to look great without breaking my budget?
Atelier's answer: Jon, We're big fans of getting more for our money, and you probably are too. See an experienced stylist for a good cut (precision cuts last longer) and take advantage of their knowledge by asking them for a styling lesson. This is valuable one-on-one time that will really give you the step-by-step on how to look your best. Salon products stretch your dollar because you use less to get a better look. Call and set up an appointment, like you would with your dentist--you'll have a better selection of appointment times and stylists.
We look forward to seeing you at Atelier soon!

Clear the Clutter Before the Holidays
'Tis the season to get organized! Whether you’re hosting a family get-together or simply need to plan for all the toys, clothing and gifts your family will receive, there’s no better way to relieve the stress of the holiday season than by getting your home organized.
- Identify spaces in your home that are the most often-used during the holidays, and tackle those areas first. For example, you might choose the family room, kitchen or the kids' closets. Don’t forget the area where you’re storing your gifts and planning your holiday wrapping!
- For each space, commit to removing as many non-used items as possible. Donate or discard items not worn or used in two years. Clearing the space of items no longer needed is imperative to staying organized!
- If you identify items that are better stored elsewhere in your home when cleaning house, relocate them. Golf bags stored in the closet? Move them to the garage. However don’t be tempted to start on another area until the first one is complete.
- Create a plan to accommodate holiday gifts. How bulky are the kids' new toys going to be? How much hanging space do you need for your new articles of clothing?
- Think about how your spaces will function when the holidays arrive. How much countertop space will you need in the kitchen for baking/cooking needs? Are your holiday dishes and glassware clean and easily accessible?
- Shop for organization solutions that will help contain the items that are staying in the space, as well as consider storage for new items you expect to receive.
- Group like items together. For example, in the kitchen, keep your baking supplies stored in a basket that you can remove from the pantry when it’s time to make your holiday cookies. Or, in the kid’s room, keep art and craft project supplies all in one place.

The Container Store: Conscious Capitalism
We’re asking customers to think again if they think we’re just about fabulous closets. Yes, we’ve been getting our customers organized for more than 30 years, but since 1978, we’ve also been running our business by putting purpose before profits. Back then, we just called it the way we do business. Kind of Golden Rule-ish – that’s the way we lived and worked. Today, we’re proud to be one of the pioneering companies in a movement called Conscious Capitalism. We’re a group of like-minded companies working together to change the face of business in America and around the world. Businesses that practice Conscious Capitalism stand for more than just making money, but rather have leaders who walk the talk through developing and nurturing a conscious culture. And we all have a firm belief that properly balancing the needs of all of a business’ stakeholders – its employees, customers, vendors, community and shareholders – is the right thing to do. As our Chairman and CEO, Kip Tindell, says, “It’s not a zero-sum game – someone doesn’t have to lose in business for others to win. Operating this way is the most sustainable form of business, the most enjoyable, and profit is the natural outcome.”
For The Container Store, it starts with putting our employees first. By doing this, our customers are delighted by their shopping experience, our vendors are true partners in our business, our stores are active in their local communities and our shareholders benefit from a healthy bottom line. We do this by following our seven Foundation Principles™ – simple business philosophies that guide everything we do. If you haven’t already, please, join our blog community and tell us what you think. Thank you again for being such an important partner in our business – we appreciate all you’ve done to help get us to where we are today and where we’ll be going tomorrow.

Guest Room Organization
Is company coming for the holidays? Now’s the time to get organized! Follow these simple tips to create a guest room that’s an inviting, thoughtful retreat for your guests.
Identify and anticipate needs
Stay in your guest room overnight one evening to identify what’s missing. Did you find you needed an extra blanket, pillows, clock, radio, reading materials? By staying overnight in the room, you can best identify the amenities your guests will appreciate. If you have a TV set or clock radio, create a guide with popular channels and stations, as well as programming instructions for the clock.
Pamper them
Your thoughtfulness will be remembered. Pamper house guests by placing fragrant liners in drawers and on shelving. Providing them with padded hangers and using room sprays add the finishing touch. Incorporate bottled water, fresh flowers and meaningful framed photographs for an extra-special touch.
A warm welcome
Providing a luggage rack in your guest room allows guests to unpack their belongings after they arrive. If they choose to keep items in their suitcase, a luggage rack makes the contents easier to access.
Clear the clutter
Guest rooms can become a dumping ground for items around your house. Take some time before guests arrive to clear the clutter. Look for often-overlooked storage space under the bed and over doors. Utilize stacking boxes and bins to maximize space in the closet.
Make room for guests' clothes
If you need to create a place for guests to hang their clothes, consider using a freestanding clothing rack that folds compactly when not in use for easy storage. These racks also are ideal for accommodating guests' coats during gatherings. Consider storage space for folded garments, as well. If you don’t have a spare drawer, add a hanging organizer to a closet or garment rack.
Thoughtful touches
Don’t forget items such as a small wastebasket, facial tissue, spare bath tissue, a jewelry tray, hamper and a basket full of fine toiletries to really make your guests feel at home!

Some things aren’t worth buying on sale…
Have you ever noticed that some things are just not worth saving money on? It's true, you get what you pay for--most of the time. What are the things of which I speak? Sushi, Plastic Surgery, and your hair!
Eat one piece of nasty fish and you'll never set foot in a Japanese restaurant again. So skip the Starbucks for a week if you have to--just get top quality fish.
Of course, you know what bad plastic surgery looks like--turn on the television and you'll see plenty. You're going to look at the results for a lifetime, so don't go all Groupon on your brow lift. There's no budget Botox.
Which brings me to hair. Of course, I live in the hair world, and I can feel when one side of my own haircut is a sixteenth of an inch longer. I can even feel when my client's hair is unbalanced. In fact, I can spot a crooked cut from across the room. I'm sure there are people out there who really aren't aware, and maybe even don't care if their haircut isn't perfect. Not many of them are sitting in my salon chair. But many people do, and there's just no substitute for education and experience, and that's what you pay for with quality work. Having a lot of regular and ongoing education sharpens a hairdresser's skills, and allows them to bring new tricks to the chair. Experience gives them the chance to try different things and decide what works, what they can do to modify it, and what doesn't work.
Now get me started on haircolor! First, let me say that I'm a licensed professional with 30 years experience. Back in the day, I spent a year in beauty school to learn haircolor, got out of school and realized I didn't learn much, and spent another few years assisting people who knew more than I did and learned some basics. Haircolor is a long road to hue. Yes, hue--as in multiple color hues! Ok, all of that experience, and I wouldn't dream of attempting to highlight my own hair with my professional techniques, much less those 'Streaks in a box' that they sell at the drugstore. Yes, but top quality haircolor services are pricey, right? That's why, at Atelier salons, we have a range of prices, so anyone can get a quality service. Our lowest price level artist still has gone through an extremely comprehensive and advanced one year training with me as well as some of my top artists who so generously mentor and teach beauty school graduates who are accepted into our training program.
That's a purchase you'll feel great about!

Shelving Sale at The Container Store
Are you overwhelmed by disorganization in your home? Some families deal with disarray in every room of their homes, and don’t always know how to remedy it. Need a simple, sure-fire fix, without adding on to your home? Think vertically with a shelving solution! Read how shelving solutions can instantly create space in every area of your home.

Kitchen
A common problem in kitchens is the lack of space for storing things like cookbooks, not-often-used appliances and serving bowls. This is especially difficult if you have a minimum of cabinet space. A freestanding shelving unit that fits into a corner of your kitchen or against a wall can accommodate oversized items, keeping them accessible, while freeing up cabinet and counter space for regularly used items.
Mudroom/Entryway
Items like book bags, shoes, umbrellas, jackets — even sports equipment — inevitably pile up right next to the door that everyone in the family enters. Add a shelving solution to corral all of those items and keep the entryway clutter free. Add a hanging rod for coats and jackets and hooks for umbrellas and backpacks. Setting up a system like this near your main door will also help reduce clutter spreading to other areas of the home.
Den/Family Room
As more and more families are spending more time surfing the Web for everything from ordering take-out food to researching movie show times, it’s helpful to create a computing station that family members can easily access. Shelving solutions are available in attractive finishes to complement your home’s décor and you can create a highly efficient, space-saving station by thinking vertically. Use shelves above for storage in attractive boxes.
Bathroom
Make an immediate impact on the organization and appearance of your bathroom by removing items from the countertop and storing them on wall-mounted shelves instead. Wall-mounted shelves are available in a variety of fashionable materials and look great while organizing your toiletries and other bath necessities. Corner shelves are ideal for super small bathrooms.
Garage
Make room for two cars in your two-car garage by maximizing the full potential of the wall space with shelving. Getting items up off of the garage floor will make a tremendous impact on the amount of space you save. Look for modular shelves to hold lawn and garden equipment, tools and car supplies. Add hooks and tool racks to complement your shelving solution.
Attic
A freestanding shelving solution divides the limited space you have in an attic for the most efficient storage of out of season items. When you store items on shelves rather than stacking boxes directly on top of each other, it’s much easier to access selected items.

Autumn hair trends for 2011
When the weather turns towards cooler weather, we make changes in our clothing. Heavier fabrics, darker colors, and closed-toe shoes all signal the end of summer. Setting off the deeper tones of these fashions, deepening our hair color gives us a balance that becomes more flattering to post-summer skin and carries us through the brisk snap of the fall months.
As the self-tanner fades, adding richness to our wardrobes will flatter paler skin tones. Warm Siennas, Golden Ambers, Fiery Coppers, Cinnamon Auburns and Chocolate Browns all bring a glow to the skin. There is a warm color for every skin tone, and your haircolor professional can recommend the best one for you, and the best way to add it into your hair.
Adding a new color can take on a subtle approach, such as weaving the new tone in for a blended effect, or for a bolder look, use a gloss in a honey or copper tone to add shine as well as a radiance of color. And don't forget to treat your hair to a vacation with a lovely drink of moisture and a dose of strengthening with an in-salon treatment--Aveda's new Botanical Hair Therapy restores health and flexibility to summer-stressed strands by 84% with just the first treatment! (For just $15 through the month of September at Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio)
Remember to consider your makeup palette when you change your hair color. Again, having a professional take a look at you and your eye color and skin tone is key. Coordinating your new hair color with a new lip color or deeper eye shadow may be just the change you need to stay in step with the changing leaves of autumn.

Back-to-School Part Two: What to Wear
When it’s time to head back to school, you are going to have plenty of things to stress about. It happens every year! And the last thing you want to stress about is what you’re going to wear. This year, get your back-to-school shopping out of the way early by simply adding a few new pieces to your wardrobe to help liven things up. Here are some of my favorite things at Santana Row right now that are both practical and cute for the 2011-2012 school year.

Free People: “FP Skinny Cords” - $68.00 (I don’t know about you, but I end up wearing jeans to class every day. Let’s switch it up this year! Aren’t these such an adorable alternative?)

Anthropologie: “Heritage Raincoat” - $288.00 (It may not be raining yet, but it will be eventually! And in the mean time, why pass up such an adorable jacket?)

Urban Outfitters: “Deena & Ozzy Crisscross Buckle Backpack” - $59.00 (Though it may seem like backpacks are outdated, don’t believe it! Backpacks can be just as cute as purses – and WAY more effective than a purse for carrying lots of heavy books!)Anthropologie: “Ridgecrest Boots” - $298.00 (A great pair of comfy boots is a must for school this year. They are cute and practical and will easily become a staple in your wardrobe.)

Free People: “Print Cat and Mouse Romper” - $108.00
We hope you have a great school year, and we hope that Santana Row can help you make that happen!

Featured Store of the Month: 100% Pure
At this day in age, we all know how important it is to be environmentally friendly, but no one seems to know it as well as 100% Pure, Santana Row’s only store dedicated to cosmetics. This store is as their name says – they are 100% organic and “pure”. To make their cosmetics (which is done right here in San Jose, CA), they use no cancer-causing, skin-irritating synthetic chemicals, chemical preservatives, harsh detergents, artificial colors, artificial fragrances, or any other unhealthy toxins. Instead, they use all natural and certified organic ingredients, which are not only better for you, but better for the environment. 100% Pure is the first and only company in the world to pigment their make-up with, get this, the skin of fruit and veggies! But they don’t just stop there. This company and its founder, Susie Wang, are completely dedicated to be harm free to the environment and to animals. Almost every product created by this company is 100% vegan, and no product is ever tested on animals. The only ingredient they use that is not vegan is honey, but it is still vegetarian and produced by free range bees! The packaging they use for their products are made of recycled papers, plastics, glass, and soda cans, and the labels are printed using vegetable ink. When you visit their store on Santana Row (which is celebrating their one year anniversary this month!), the hardwood used for the floors was salvaged from an old ship. The thing that really stands out about this store is that they have made sure to cover every angle – their attention to detail is unparalleled!
But what’s the best part about this make-up? It really works! Just because this make-up is made differently than other make-ups on the market does not mean you’re settling. Almost every kind of make-up you can get from 100% Pure is packed with anti-oxidants, which in case you didn’t know, are amazingly good for your body and your skin. And since your skin absorbs 60% of what is put on it, wearing anti-oxidant rich make-up is good for both your face and your health! You also won’t be settling for make-up with limited or dull colors. The colors are vibrant and lasting. Don’t believe me? Just check out the red lipstick below. (Don’t forget to read the ingredients – my favorite part!)

As if all the things I’m saying aren’t enough to convince you, it gets even better… the products are actually affordable! For example, a container of foundation is only $32, and for make-up that is healthy, environmentally and animal friendly, and locally made, I’d say that’s a pretty great price! PLUS, for the month of August at 100% Pure, if you bring in any kind of clean dog supplies (toys, food, blanket, etc.), you will receive 25% off your purchase! This is part of 100% Pure’s “Doggie Compassion Campaign”. The supplies that are brought into the store will be donated to a local organization that helps rehabilitate pit bulls that have been abused. Just one more way that Susie Wang and 100% Pure are dedicated to the well being of animals.
What are you waiting for? Stop by Santana Row’s 100% Pure today. And don’t forget to bring supplies for dogs for your 25% off!

YANKEE PIER: The green on spinach
In the middle of the summer, it’s only natural to gravitate toward fresher, lighter foods; our bodies in warm weather are not inclined to be bogged down by a hefty scoop of something rich like mashed potatoes, but not everyone wants to eat salad all the time, either. Spinach is a healthy median, particularly for its availability, versatility and affordability.
Originally from Persia (modern-day Iran), Spinach was originally known as aspanakh, making its way to India by way of Arab traders, then into China in the 7th century, as a gift from the King of Nepal, where it was and still is regarded as “the Persian green or vegetable.” It did not take long to diffuse into Europe, by way of ingenious cultivation techniques from the Persians, allowing the Muslims to introduce it to Spain in the 11th century, where the great Arab agronomist Ibn al-'Awwam gave it another nickname, the "captain of leafy greens." It gained popularity quickly because of its early seasonal appearance where there were few other vegetable options and when Lent was practiced and discouraged consumption of other foods.
In the next few centuries, spinach became quite the gourmet item, utilized in Turkish, French and Italian cooking in many different ways; in soups, served with meat and yogurt sauce, incorporated in fish and rice dishes, and combined with cheese. In the 16th century, it became a pronounced favorite of Catherine de Medici, a noblewoman from Italy and the queen of France at that time, to the point of her insistence of it being served at every meal. Since then, dishes served on a bed of spinach are often called “Florentine” or “ala Florentine,” reflecting her birthplace in Florence.
It did not reach North America till the 19th century, where it was successfully cultivated but perhaps did not reach its popularity potential until 1929, when the cartoon, “Popeye, the Sailor Man” debuted, where the main character attributed his strength to the power of spinach. Today, more than half of the American population associate spinach with “Popeye.”
And although the cartoon is highly exaggerated, there is truth to the power of spinach, health-wise. It is considered a superfood, dense with vitamins, minerals and antioxidants (including vitamin K, C, E, B6, iron, potassium and calcium) with the added benefit of low calories. It is also excellent for cleansing, purifying and restoring balance to the intestines. As alternative medicine, it is also beneficial for those with arterial hypertension and irritated skin (topically).
Because of its overall versatility, it can be difficult to decide how to prepare spinach. There are three basic types, all good for different things. There is the savoy, with dark green, crinkly and curly leaves, sold in fresh bunches at most supermarkets and excellent raw in salads or sandwiches or sautéed (Bloomsdale is a popular heirloom variety). Then there is the flat or smooth leaf spinach, with broad, smooth leaves much easier to clean and great in soups, pestos or purees. And lastly there is the semi-savoy, not as curly but still dark green, technically the hybrid variety, easier to clean than the savoy but great to use in either capacity, raw or cooked. However you decide to prepare spinach, make sure it’s fresh because it loses its health benefits after just a couple of days.
Some classic combinations:
- Anchovies
- Bacon
- Cream
- Garlic
- Lemon
- Mustard
- Nutmeg
- Olive oil
- Vinegar
- Feta, goat, parmesan and ricotta cheeses
Eat fresh, eat local, always!

Color Blocking is Back!
This may not be the first time you have heard about this fashion statement, and it is not likely to be the last! Color blocking was a huge trend in the 1960’s when mod fashion was around, and it’s back now in 2011! This trend, though it may look complicated, is really quite simple. There are plenty of pieces that come already color blocked for you, but if you are adventurous enough, go out on a limb and get funky! Pair some bright pants with a striped shirt. The only rule here is this… Don’t match! It seems a little scary, but isn’t that the fun of it? Below are some pieces from around the Row to help you get started on your crazy color blocked wardrobe!

H&M: “Color-Blocked Sweater” - $29.95

Urban Outfitters: “Sparkle & Fade Colorblock Top” - $39.99-54.00

Urban Outfitters: “BDG Cigarette High-Rise Jean” - $58.00
If you are not ready for the vibrant side of color blocking, don’t worry. Neutrals or even black and white paired with a color can be a great way to color block.

BCBG: “Carey Color-Blocked Sleeveless Dress” – $178.00
Hey guys! Don’t worry, we haven’t forgotten about you - you can join in the fun, too! Try a simpler color-blocking, like something with only two colors. Check out the jacket below from H&M.

H&M: “Hooded Jacket” - $19.95

Santana Row’s Featured Store of the Month: Big Buddha
Please help me in welcoming one of Santana Row’s newest stores to our property: this month’s Featured Store is Big Buddha! Located in between Paper Source and lululemon on the main strip, Big Buddha is a retailer of 100% eco-friendly and fashionable handbags, shoes, and other accessories – all at an affordable price! Big Buddha’s designer Jeremy Bassan has recently teamed up with none other than Steve Madden to help expand his line of handbags to include shoes and belts as well. The jewelry you will see in Big Buddha is their Lotus Line, and is designed by the same woman who designs the jewelry at Flying Lizard Designs (another store right here in Santana Row!) and is all made locally.
The Santana Row store is only Big Buddha’s second store (and their first ever store on the west coast), but their brand has already become quite well known. They have even been featured in magazines such as Glamour, InStyle, Seventeen, O Magazine, Lucky, and many more. Though they have only been at Santana Row for two months, they are already making a big splash! And how could they not be? Vegan, affordable, and adorable, this store is the perfect combination of so many great things!
Head over to Big Buddha today to see what all the fuss is about. When you do, make sure to mention the “Featured Store of the Month” blog and receive 20% off your purchase* throughout the month of July! To see which items I liked most from my recent trip to Big Buddha, please see below!
*This offer is not valid on sale items. Please see store for details.

ATELIER AVEDA: Summer’s here, love is in the air, and we are in love with weddings!
Bridal season brings so much joy and excitement--it's such a wonderful time of the year. Atelier's resident bridal specialist, Kim Nguyen, offers her words of wisdom on creating the perfect hair look for your special day.
Hi, I'm Kim, and I'm a newlywed. I love working with brides, because their happy energy is wonderful to be around, and weddings are such joyous occasions. I'd like to offer some advice to the brides following in my footsteps down their own aisles.
As a hair artist at Atelier on Santana Row, I have developed a specialty in wedding hair. I believe that the most important first step in the bridal process is a thorough conversation and a trial run for the bride. During this important visit, brides can bring ideas, pictures, headpieces, veils and any questions they may have. Research is encouraged and extremely helpful. This is the perfect time to tell me about how temperamental your hair may be or whether your wedding venue is indoors/outdoors. Bring in photos of your dream hair, and the hairstyles you definitely don't want! The more details you give me, the better. What is your veil or headpiece like?
There are some fabulous hair accessories for brides and bridesmaids that add a bit of your personality to your crowning glory: bird cage veils, traditional veils, decorative hair pins, fresh flowers, silk flowers, etc. We'll consider your dress and hair texture when choosing a hairstyle and accessories. Some brides want to grow out their hair for the big day so they have as many options as possible; don't forget to get trims and conditioning treatments to keep your locks shiny and healthy. If your hair is looking dull or lacking sparkle, consider adding some highlights or a glossing treatment to bring out the details in your hairstyle and make your tresses gleam.
Above all, consider your comfort and your dancing activity level when deciding on how you want to wear your hair. Will the chosen style withstand a round of the Electric Slide or a ballroom twirl? Your future husband will love you and think you're beautiful no matter what you wear or how you look, so be confident and comfortable in your own skin/hair. Be yourself, just a bit more glam. Here's my advice from one bride to another; your wedding day is YOUR day, enjoy it and don't worry about the little things. It's time to relax and enjoy the result of the months of planning. Ask for help from friends and family if you feel overwhelmed, and above all, remember to breathe and take in the precious memories that are being made on your special day.
Come in and see me for a consultation if you need help with your bridal hair decisions. We also have amazing makeup artists if you need that service, too.
I look forward to meeting you soon!
--Kim Nguyen, Atelier hair artist and bridal specialist

Summertime Work Wear to Night Wear
Effortlessly transform your attire from work wear to party wear! There’s no need to drive all the way home, stress about a new outfit, and waste time getting ready after work and before play. Here are three fail-proof suggestions to help you go from day to night in a breeze.
1. Wear a cute, form-fitting dress to work. Because this garment can look both professional and sexy, it’s the perfect piece in your wardrobe to have you covered all day and into the night. You’ll be femme-professional at work and ready to rock after hours.

Ann Taylor Loft: “Short Sleeve Carla Ruffle Sheath” - $89.50
2. Pair a patterned, silky top with a black pencil skirt – or vice versa! When you go out at night, you don’t want to look or feel like you just came from a long day at the office. A pencil skirt and a tucked-in silky top is a great combination for both work and play, but you’ll feel less work and more play if you throw some black in there. It’s still very professional, but feels more fun than beige in the nightclubs!

Anthropologie: “Loosened Shelby Blouse” - $58.00

Ann Taylor Loft: “Linen/Cotton Pencil Skirt” - $59.50
3. Accessorize appropriately! Whatever you decide to wear during the day can be radically transformed at night with the right help from your accessories. Pair your outfit with flats or kitten heels, a skinny belt, and stud earrings during the day. At night, go all out! Bust out your sexy high heels and some fabulous earrings or chunky bracelets. Also, don’t forget to bring a little make-up bag along for either a touchup or a more dramatic look.
Day:

Anthropologie: “Chameleon Heels” - $90.00

Anthropologie: “Silvered Skinny Belt” - $32.00

Urban Outfitters: “Beaded Disk Post Earrings” - $12.00
Night:

Chico’s: “Felicienne Earrings” - $28.00

BCBG: “Crisscross-Strap High Heel” - $175.00

Anthropologie: “Grandmother’s Patchwork Bracelet” - $128.00
You’re now all ready for the summer, both in the office and out, with no hassle. As usual, Santana Row is the place to find all your fashion needs!

The Container Store: Organized Travel with Kids
Whether you’re traveling by plane, train or automobile, it is possible to enjoy a stress-free and organized vacation with the kids! Follow these tips and you’ll be on the road to organized family travel.

Try to plan your travel at a time that works best for your child. If you’re traveling by car, it might be helpful to start your trip closer to your child’s naptime. Avoid long layovers or late-night flights if traveling by air. Also, when boarding a plane, consider having one adult board with the luggage and the other wait until the last boarding call to get on the plane with the child — that means less time strapped into a seat for your child. Keep travel documents for each family member together and put one person in charge of keeping track of them.
Involve your child in as many aspects of the trip as possible, from selecting the destination to choosing which items she’d like to bring. When preparing to pack, you should pre-select clothing options that are appropriate for the destination, then let your child choose which ones she’d like to bring. This allows you to have control over what’s packed, but she has a say in what she will wear. Pack complete outfits (top, bottom, undergarments) in clear, reclosable bags so that it’s easy for your child to have everything she needs to get dressed each day.
Proper preparation should be made in advance to ensure kids don’t become unruly and impatient when faced with delays. Take along an assortment of favorite toys, crayons, books, snacks and a bottle of water for each child. Some parents like to bring new toys when traveling with kids — the novelty may keep them entertained for longer periods of times. Think about quiet toys if traveling by airplane. Give kids travel bags that they can pack with their own favorite things — and that they can carry.
Be prepared for life’s little emergencies
Pack a kid with first aid supplies and other necessities that is always easy to access when you’re traveling. Store it either in an outer pocket of a suitcase or in your carry on or day bag. Consider carrying a small supply of the following items: bandages, pain reliever, stomach medicine, first aid ointment, sunscreen, hand sanitizer, stain removal pen and a sewing kit.
Join The Container Store for FREE expert Organized Travel demonstrations, Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm thorough June 26. They’ll giveaway one $15 Store More Card at each demonstration!

Did you know that .......Santana Row is one of first to carry robins?
When it comes to comfortable, relaxed and carefree, designer Robin Chretien embodies them best. Known for his smile, energy and big heart he embraces life, surrounds himself with people that he loves and starts each day following his dreams.
Born in Lyon, France Robin has always been immersed in a creative environment. His mother a talented fashion designer and his father an artist, always encouraged his creative talents and dreams; and Robin was a big dreamer. Intrigued by airplanes, flight and the freedome of the blue sky, he began to spread his creative wings at a very young age and by sixteen he started translating those big blue dreams into big denim fashion realities.
Robin arrived in Los Angeles in 1996. His talents, youth and good looks caught the eye of the best denim companies in Los Angeles. At a time when most denim was designed around basic styles, Robin’s attention to fabrics, washes and detail made him the man with the Midas touch and it was not long before he began to soar. Designing for Blue Cult, followed by head designing Hudson Jeans, the name of Robin Chretien flew quickly to the top of the best denim designer’s list in the United States.
Robin loved living in America. He was fascinated with the American Indian and the spirit that embodied warriors and their fight for freedom. A lover at heart, his soul lived for the freedom of the open road and the big sky. His passion for motorcycles, vintage cars and old school cinema became his inspiration for a new brand. He was eager to produce product that was truly his own and would reflect the passions of his childhood dreams.
In 2005, he took on that dream. Symbolized by gold wings, Robin’s Jean captures Robin’s childhood dream of freedom and flight. “Wearing a pair of Robin’s Jeans makes you feel alive, free, spontaneous and able to do anything you put your heart and soul into” says Robin.
Today Robin lives in LA with his wife Isabelle, twin girls Chloe and Mary-lou and son Cheyenn. They are the center of his life and inspiration.

Atelier AVEDA owner, Karie Bennett, talks about Weathering the Economic Storm
What's your Silver Lining?
Weathering the Economic Storm
As any small business owner will agree, the changes that our economy has been through in the past few years have been challenging at best. Tightening our entrepreneurial belts has been an important focus of business life in order to weather the downturn. Some say things are turning around and we're on our way back up. Did we learn anything from the experience? Was there a silver lining?
As a consumer, I can remember the day I noticed that big business had caught a whiff of my dissatisfaction. A year ago I needed to paint a couple of walls in my home. I had a color in mind, and went to my local home improvement store for paint samples. I waited for almost 30 minutes before the sole "paint technician" turned his attention on me to mix my can of paint. The line of customers at that paint counter was long, and studded with impatience, anger, and lots of sighs. People were walking out of the store, tired of waiting. It was obvious that stores with lagging sales were starting to cut back on staff; resulting in a drop in the level of customer service, resulting in unhappy customers who stopped shopping, which resulted in lagging sales...you get the drift.
Two weeks later, that Labor Day weekend, I went back to that same home improvement store to buy the paint. I dreaded the chore, but needed that color, that brand. I steeled myself for another frustrating, time-wasting experience. I was pleasantly surprised. It seemed as if the company had held an employee rally, and reminded the staff that they were in the customer service business. Not only were there additional "paint mixer-uppers", there were home improvement "guides" to help me find what I needed and suggest items I didn't know I needed but wound up purchasing. Instead of my having to track down an associate to help me choose the right paintbrush, a staffer found me, and offered suggestions. I went from seeking out someone specializing in one department to being a special person to the department. Not only did I purchase the paint I came for, but I also bought extra rollers, brushes, and masking tape. Was I resentful that I had spent more than I had planned? Actually, no, I felt that I had been assisted to do a better job in my do-it-yourself painting project, and that the store cared about me. That was a level of customer service that I hadn't expected from a big, publicly held chain store. But I got it and I haven't forgotten it, two years later.
Their silver lining was more attentive service. The store had realized that without a major step-up in the way they treated their customers, they wouldn't be able to weather the recession, much less thrive in it, and that having better staffing levels to help the customer identify their needs would help sales grow.
I have since noticed this trend continue to trickle down from the large businesses on down to the small ones. In my own salons, Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio, we have 5-star initiatives in place for our customers at every point of contact, and we keep coaching our employees on it. We don't wait to hear of a problem that needs to be solved, we ask our customers how we're doing whenever we can, to ensure that every one of them knows that they are special and important to us. These initiatives start with making our employees feel special and important through a benefits package that focuses on their health, their continuing education, and their future. We also celebrate customer feedback by sharing it with our team. Of course we love all the compliments, since they tell us we're on the right track, but we also thank our customers for telling us where our opportunities for improvement are. And we make those improvements happen.
So, I would say yes, there was a silver lining to the economic downturn, to those business owners who kept their eyes and ears open and used the situation to get better at the service they provided, to do whatever it took to keep people employed, product on the shelf, and a storefront open for the community.
It looks like sunny days might be ahead of us.

The Container Store: Top 10 Organized Travel Tips
Whether your summer travels take you to the sunny shores of Spain or to the breathtaking sights of the Grand Canyon, there are a few things you should know before you go. Take advantage of these valuable tips to enjoy an organized and stress-free trip.

1. Plan Ahead
Before you start any journey, research the conditions and requirements for your trip. Do your research, make a checklist of the things you absolutely need and start packing. Allow yourself plenty of time so you don’t forget necessary items or hurriedly over pack with things you don’t need. If you travel frequently create a packing list on your computer that you can update to include “must-haves” and blank space for trip specific items.
2. Communicate
Remember to let friends, family and trusted neighbors know where you are going, how long you’ll be gone and how to reach you. If you’ll be away for an extended period of time, have the post office hold your mail and put a hold on your newspaper subscription. Some periodicals offer you the opportunity to have your newspaper donated to a non-profit organization while you are away. Contact your credit card company if you are traveling abroad — charges made in other countries can often raise flags about credit card theft and your card could be declined.
Arrange to have pets boarded or cared for by a friend. Water houseplants well before leaving, or set up a time-released watering system. Set timers on the interior and exterior lights in your home. Hide valuables somewhere in the house rather than leaving them in your jewelry box or an underwear drawer; be sure to let someone else know your hiding place in case you forget. Set your thermostat at a reasonable temperature in order to save on summer cooling costs — keep it comfortable for pets and houseplants.
If you’re taking a road trip, be sure to give your car a thorough pre-vacation inspection. Check the tires and all fluid levels. Inspect windshield wipers, hoses and belts for wear. Don’t forget an emergency kit that includes jumper cables, basic hand tools, flares, a first aid kit and a flashlight.
5. Don’t Take the Kitchen Sink
When planning for your weekend, keep in mind that many hotels offer a variety of amenities that you won’t need to bring from home. For example, many facilities feature hairdryers in each room; therefore you can leave yours at home and reduce the bulk in your suitcase. The same is true for items like robes and beach towels so, save space for something you know you will need.
As you plan your outfits for the week, try to keep the bottom half of your wardrobe (pants, shorts, skirts) very basic. Take khaki and black bottoms along that can be mixed with different tops to create new outfits. Select shoes that can be worn with multiple outfits.
If you prefer to travel with your clothes on hangers in a garment bag, you can help prevent wrinkles by placing each garment in its own dry cleaner bag. Use a clothing compression system in your carry-on, as well as in your checked luggage, to make the most of the space. The slippery plastic bag keeps the clothes from shifting and rubbing together, which is the main reason clothes wrinkle during travel. To keep clothes in your garment bag from creasing along the middle fold, roll a sweater or light jacket up and place it in the fold.
8. Step in the Right Direction
If you’re flying to your destination, it’s usually a good idea to wear your bulkiest pair of shoes onto the airplane. To help save space in your bag, you can stuff socks and undergarments in the shoes you’re packing. Place them in shoe bags to protect the other items in your suitcase and pack them at the bottom of your bag to prevent damage to the other contents. If you are traveling with bulky sweaters, jackets or towels use a travel compression system to save space in your luggage.
Make copies of information that is pertinent to your trip from travel magazines and guidebooks — there’s no need to bring the entire guide. Keep the papers together in a pouch so all the information is organized and accessible and fits flat inside your suitcase.
You should be prepared for the unexpected but you don’t need to bring along the entire medicine cabinet to remedy the situation. Prepare a small first aid kit with only the basics and a travel-sized sewing kit. You’ll be glad you have them when you need them.

The Container Store: Drawer Organization 101
Every drawer in your home serves as valuable storage space. However, because they offer out of sight storage, drawers can often become the victims of disarray. Here are some helpful hints for keeping what you store behind closed drawers easily accessible and organized.
Before determining what you’re going to place in each drawer and how it will be organized, line it! Drawers in different areas of the home require different types of liners. In the kitchen, select a liner with some padding or texture that is also easy to wipe clean. In the office, you may opt for a more decorative liner. Scented liners are ideal for bedroom and guest room drawers. To contain spills, choose a thick plastic liner for bathroom drawers.
Keep in mind the location of each drawer when selecting a system. Drawer organizers for office, closet and bedroom can be made of natural materials like woven fibers, fabric or wood since they will be less likely to be exposed to moisture, water or stains. Kitchen and bath solutions should typically be plastic, metal mesh or stainless steel so that they are easy to wipe down and keep clean.
- For clothing drawers, leverage the drawers' depth by selecting modular organizers with higher sides for organizing bras, underwear and folded T-shirts. For storing folded intimates, you may select a fabric-lined organizer that will be gentle to delicate fabrics. A scented sachet is always a nice touch!
- Place utensils, gadgets and tools that you use most frequently in the drawers closest to your kitchen workspace. Lower drawers should be reserved for your least-frequently used items like BBQ essentials or entertaining pieces.
- If you are short on time and have somewhat standard cutlery to organize, pre-formed trays are easy and efficient. Expandable organizers take advantage of every inch of space from side to side.
- If you have an odd-shaped drawer or items of many different sizes to store, modular organizers are the best solution. With these organizers, you can divide the drawer to fit what you are storing, creating a totally customized solution.
- In the office, select a designated area within each drawer for each office supply. This allows for quick accessibility and also for quick transport of supplies to other areas of the home for work or craft projects. It also lets other family members know exactly where an item can be found or replaced after each use.
- When organizing bathroom drawers, group like items together such as make-up, cleansers, cotton swabs, cotton balls, brushes, combs and hair accessories.

The Container Store: Fight Fridge Clutter
By establishing order in your refrigerator and freezer — spaces you access at least three times a day — you’ll enjoy a stress-free meal preparation experience. Plus, you won’t forget (or overlook) ingredients you already have on-hand — a major money-saver. Read on to learn the recipe for successful organization in your most often used kitchen appliance — the refrigerator!
- The first step in organizing your fridge and freezer is to take inventory and discard out of date items or items you will not likely use.
- Take advantage of adjustable shelves and drawers, found readily in most new appliances. Since many shoppers like to buy the same brands (with the same packaging) over and over again, taking time to set your shelves and drawers accordingly will save you time in the long run.
- Organize food items by size. Doing so will create a function for each shelf and make it much easier to locate your small, hard to see items. S tore items in jars or bottles in the refrigerator door and bagged items in the freezer door.
- Look for organizers that maximize shelf space — for example, shelves or dispensers that can be added to existing shelves to maximize the vertical space.
- Keep the most often used items in front for easy access the whole family will appreciate. You may also find that ready-made snacks are helpful to curb your cravings — fresh fruit or veggies that are pre-washed and ready to eat will suddenly seem more enticing!
- Everybody has a small shelf that never seems quite big enough. Put it to use with leftover storage because containers that stack and are similar in shape will maximize the deep, narrow space. Don’t forget to label your items before storing them!
- To combat odors keep an open box of baking soda in the back corner. Vanilla extract will also keep your fridge fresh. Soak a cotton ball or paper towel, put it on a paper plate and wait for it to dry before removing.
- Clean out both your fridge and your freezer once a month. Make it part of your household cleaning routine. Doing so will make it easier to know what you have and what you still need, in addition to keeping the areas clean.

Platforms Please!
Booties, wedges, heels, and sandals all have one thing in common in 2011… they have all been platformed! Keep in mind that I’m not talking about cherry red, five-inch, patent platform boots. These platforms are small, classy, and definitely adorable. It has become almost impossible to go a store and not see shoes with platforms and as always, the stores in Santana Row are up on the trend. If you are in need of a new pair of cute shoes, give platforms a try. It will give you that extra bit of height without being overwhelming, and plus, you’ll be totally in fashion!
Here are some platforms from the Santana Row stores that sell shoes. We hope you enjoy them!

Anthropologie – 'Lemon Stick Wedges' $148.00 (1.25” platform)

Ann Taylor Loft – “Brandon Caged Heel” $99.50 (0.75” platform)

BCBG – “Jeweled Peep Toe Pump” $325.00 (1” platform)

Burberry – “Leather Platform Sandal” $750.00 (1.18” platform)

Donald J. Pliner – “Cleva” $395.00 (1.75” platform)
*NOTE: Did you know that cork is a highly sustainable material? Makes these shoes that much cuter, huh?

Ted Baker – “Svana” $175.00 (platform height unknown)

The Walking Company (Footworks) – “Cara 3 Strap Wedge” made by Umberto Raffini - $109.95 (0.5” platform)
See? Didn’t I tell you platforms are all the rage? So whether you go small or tall with your new shoes from Santana Row, you are sure to look cute and feel great this summer. (Just please… nothing over 5 inches. We’re not quite there yet.)

Donald J. Pliner at Santana Row
Donald J. Pliner at Santana Row
by Carlina Harris
With the boho-hippie movement in full trend effect, I was pleasantly surprised at the Pliner shoe offerings a few weeks ago at a party celebrating the celeb appearances of Donald and Lisa Pliner in their the Santana Row boutique. The Donald himself was flurry-ing back and forth between shoppers, a windmill of excitement and Euro-chic presence in head to toe white, not to mention he was rocking the hell out of a bedazzled pair of his puppy print loafers! Amidst a sea of black card Am-Ex shoppers, trays of haute sushi bites, and full to the brim wine glasses, the atmosphere was eclectic, and fun! I got in on the excitement by trying on a pair of beaded heels I was eyeing all afternoon- after half a glass of my never-ending wine goblet, I was more than thrilled to take off boots and socks in front of strangers, be helped by a lovely man urging me to try on the $400+ pair of shoes, and prance around like Cinderella in shoes that were worth more than my entire outfit. The shoes were beautiful and one of a kind, but ultimately did not end up of going home with me (oh the pain!). While I may not have made a purchase, the boutique's register never ceased ringing for moment, whether it was the coveted signature of Pliner on the sole of all shoes purchased, or the one of a kind hand beaded job found only on Pliners very exquisite European shoes- it was never doubted why these two have made a fortune making and selling shoes. Check them out here, and tell me which your favorite Pliner shoe is!

Beautiful skin is the ultimate cosmetic
We asked Atelier's Aveda-certified esthetician Rebecca Chewning why regular therapeutic skin care is important:
Your skin is the largest organ in the body and it is also the last to get any nutrients from the food you ingest. So it's crucial to maintain a healthy, well-balanced diet and engage in relaxing activities to reduce the stressor hormone levels in your body. We generally spend our attention on having nice clothes, going to get our nails done or getting that new designer purse, but we neglect the one thing that everyone notices, and looks directly at in any human interaction: our face, and more specifically, our skin. At Atelier, we believe that having beautiful skin is the ultimate cosmetic. People instantly notice and are quick to compliment great-looking skin. Make it a priority in your schedule and in your budget to get that facial or massage. It's the best investment you can make. Of course, we get an instant gratification from buying a new pair of shoes, however, the overall skin benefit and relaxation that you receive from getting a facial is a so much more gratifying and will last you much longer.
The California lifestyle has always been one of a laid-back stereotype, but it seems that lately, we've become more accustomed to a higher-stress, faster paced way of life. When people come to Aveda for a facial, it is not just about rubbing lotions on the skin, but it is about taking some "me time" out of your busy schedule. An Aveda facial utilizes the incredible stress-relieving benefits of essential oils and aromatherapy to stimulate the 'feel-good' chemicals produced by the brain. Our guests find themselves dozing off because of the relaxing effects of the aromas. What a compliment! At Atelier, it's all about treating our guests as unique individuals with unique needs. Every facial is customized to your specific needs. And, we never leave the room while your masque is on, we use that time to further make your experience special, by adding hand and foot treatments to really pamper you from head to toe.
Taking some time for yourself to rest, relax, and recharge helps you to be 100% for everyone else.

Call Atelier at 408-244-4222 or schedule your appointment online at:

Free People, Welcome to Santana Row!
On Friday, March 18, a brand new store opened up in Santana Row called Free People, and we are so excited to have them! Free People is a bohemian chic boutique that describes their customer as: “a 26-year-old girl, smart, creative, confident and comfortable in all aspects of her being, free and adventurous, sweet to tough to tomboy to romantic. A girl who likes to keep busy and push life to its limits, with traveling and hanging out and everything in between”*. Free People is a sister store to Anthropologie and Urban Outfitters, both of which are already on Santana Row. (Now we have the whole family!) This really is a great store that you are not going to want to pass by. But don’t just take my word for it; go see for yourself! Free People is located at 333 Santana Row, Suite 1115, right in between Strait’s Café and Brooks Brothers, and is now open! Below, I have included some examples of their merchandise for your viewing pleasure. To see their whole collection, visit them online at www.freepeople.com. Enjoy!

The Container Store: Office Sale!
Don’t get tangled up in yards of electrical cords, follow these simple solutions and get “plugged into” cord organization.

Consolidate
The key to organizing all of those cords hiding behind your TV and in your home office is to round them up into a bundle; one bundle is less messy than several loose ones. Keep the number of cords to a minimum; you should never have more than five cords bundled together at one outlet.
Color code
It’s helpful to color code all of your cords at both ends to eliminate confusion at the power strip. The next time you need to unplug your DVD player, you won’t unplug the stereo by accident. You can even place a label at the base of the cord what appliance or media component it goes to.
Eliminate unnecessary length
Keep cables neatly tucked away from pets and stored at a safe distance from foot traffic. To avoid a big mess and potential danger, keep the unused cord length tightly coiled and secured. Hang the coil on the back of a nearby piece of furniture or with a hook on a hidden spot on the wall, entertainment center, desk, etc.
High-tech, not high maintenance
Keep all of your favorite gadgets quick and easy to access. Designate an area in your home office or just inside the front door where you can charge your cell phone, iPod® or digital camera. Hook these items up to their charger as soon as you return home so the next time you leave, they are ready to go.
Use hooks
To prevent wear and tear, hang your electrical cords on a hook rather than throwing them in the bottom of a drawer where they can become tangled or frayed. For safety reasons, never use staples or nails, which can damage the insulation, when storing cords or affixing them to walls.
Exercise caution
If given a choice, it’s best to plug electronics directly into the wall. Use an extension cord only when the cord isn’t long enough. Using the wrong cord or using it incorrectly can create safety hazards, so be sure to read the labels before plugging in.
Visit The Container Store in Santana Row for their FREE office organization demonstrations Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, through March 27th. They’ll give away a $25 Store More Card at each demonstration!

The Traveling Kiwi
Now that spring approaches, thoughts often turn to sun-ripened fruit, a cool, sweet juicy bite that delights as much as it refreshes. Kiwi, with its fuzzy brown peel and bright emerald flesh, is proving one can't judge a book by its cover, slowly but surely making its way onto modern menus in signature dishes and specialty cocktails. Its unique taste, sort of a hybrid of banana, strawberry and pineapple, is a welcome addition to today's ever-growing flavor profiles.
A late-comer on the international market, the kiwifruit, borne on woody, twining vines and shrubs, first made its appearance in northern and eastern China, where it was known as Yang Tao ("sunny peach") or Mihao Tao ("macaque peach"), but renamed several times. Once, for descriptive purposes by the Europeans ("Chinese gooseberry"), another for export marketing reasons in the 50's ("melonette"), and lastly, by the first batch of outside growers from New Zealand to "kiwifruit," named after their national symbol, a brown flightless bird, for mass appeal reasons alone. It's ironic that this is the name that stuck and eventually became adopted because it was such an irrelevent suggestion containing absolutely no actual ties to its origin. Since then, the fruit has traveled all over the world, now also grown widely in Europe and North America.
Although regarded as the "National Fruit" of the People's Republic of China, the country was never extremely interested in exploiting or even utilizing the fruit, regarding the kiwi solely as a tonic for growing children and for women after childbirth. This is truly a shame because of its staggering nutritional benefits. For example, one kiwi contains more vitamin C than an orange and just as much potassium as a banana, with additional healthy doses of fiber and beta-carotene, which can considerably decrease the chances of diabetes, colon cancer and cardiovascular disease. Some international studies have also shown health benefits to the respiratory tract, preventing asthma, wheezing and coughing, particularly in children.
It's also quite versatile in both sweet and savory applications. Its easiest and most simple preparation is just peeled, sliced and eaten, but it can also be a delicious addition to cheesecakes, tarts and
cereal, a surprising component in a chicken salad, or pureed and integrated into a refreshing cocktail. Perhaps one of the more interesting uses is that of a meat tenderizer, perfect for a short-term rub or marinade on a less tender cut of meat (after about 10 minutes the enzyme effect will be excessive). The same enzyme, however, makes raw kiwi unsuitable for use in desserts containing dairy or gelatin, breaking down those proteins, liquefying and in some instances, absorbing the ingredients. However, a quick bake or saute of the fruit can overcome this obstacle.
This mysterious, beautiful fruit is definitely an unsung hero of the season. Be sure to try a kiwi margarita at Yankee Pier before the season is over.
Eat fresh, eat local, always!

Santana Row Style Expert: Let’s Get Nude!
On the runways and on the streets, the color nude is becoming widely popular. The fashion world is loving “second-skin” colors for the spring and summer of 2011. Now, we all have been in the situation where we tried to go nude and the color has ended up completely washing us out. The trick is to find the right shade to complement, and not detract from, your skin’s natural tone. Here at Santana Row, almost all of our merchants are on the nude train, so come on down, hop on board, and look fresh and in fashion as the weather gets warmer!
Here are some examples of nude garments from around the Row that will freshen up your look:

Anthropologie: Ardisia Maxi Dress - $228.

Urban Outfitter: BDG 5-Pocket Short - $39.

Ted Baker: Doka - $235.
Psst! Cute shoes, huh? Here they are!

Chico’s: Travelers Liquid Shimmer Pamela Tank - $59.
As always, you don’t have to dress head to toe in the current fashion. If you get a little wary of overwhelming your complexion, try nude accessories instead! Nude heels, purses, and nail polish can all make your look pop in a very fashion-forward way.

Urban Outfitters: Deena & Ozzy Zip-Front Moto Satchel - $68.

Anthropologie: Playing Favorites Necklace - $48.

Urban Outfitters: Anna Sui Shimmer Nail Polish - $15.

The Container Store: Office Sale - Create an Organized Filing System
Is your file cabinet a mess? Are you unable to quickly locate documents when they’re needed? Create an organized system for storing important documents and you’ll never again waste time searching for items. Follow these simple steps to create your organized filing system.
- Purge old, obsolete files. Shred items with personal information.
- Identify what papers needs to be placed in active files and what goes in the permanent files.
- Active files hold resource materials which are regularly referred to for information.
- Permanent files are rarely referred to but contain records we are required to retain, such as tax and legal records.
- Select a filing solution based on your needs and space. Active files can be stored separately from permanent files and should be more easily accessible.
- Choose colorful file folders to organize by topic.
- Use hanging files for topic and divide subtopics with interior files.
- Alphabetize main categories to save time.
- Clearly label each file.
- File immediately — the key to keeping your filing system up-to-date is to file things right away.
- Always have plenty of folders and labels on hand.
- Set a recurring time to review your files and keep them up to date.

Visit The Container Store in Santana Row to learn more – join us for our FREE demonstrations Saturdays and Sundays at 2:00 pm and 4:00 pm, February, 26th through March 27th! They’ll give away a $25 Store More Card at each demonstration!

Purses for Everyone!
If you have ever shopped for a purse, which I’m guessing you have, you know how overwhelming it can be. Practically every store and designer known to man makes purses, which is great because it gives us lots of options, but can also be extremely intimidating! Here are a few simple guidelines on how to find the purse you’re looking for.
It may seem elementary, but before you head out into the world of purses and get swept off your feet, think logically about what it is you really want. The three basic things you need to decide are:
1) Price. What is the absolute most you are willing to spend on a handbag? Once you have determined this number, you can automatically rule out anything that goes over (no matter how cute it is!)
2) Size. Do you have a lot of things that you need to carry around every day? You’ll need a bigger bag. Or, are you sick of carrying around lots of unnecessary junk? Go for a smaller bag. By determining this factor before you go looking, you can allow yourself to not be fooled by an adorable bag that doesn’t fit your needs.
3) Color. You can be as strict or as loose as you want with this guideline. If you absolutely need a brown bag, then don’t let yourself get swayed by the black ones! Maybe you are just looking for a lighter colored bag for the spring and summer. Make sure to keep that in mind while looking around.
These guidelines will only work if you are strict with yourself. Maybe you aren’t looking for a particular bag, but just want something new. As long as you have assessed what it is you want or need, it will make the world of purse shopping that much simpler. And when you have figured all of this out, it is time for the fun part: shopping! Here at Santana Row, we have purses everywhere! No matter what price, size, and color, we have something for you.
Note: The bags below are listed from lowest to highest price by category. Enjoy!

Urban Outfitters: 'Kimchi Blue Foldover Clutch' - $20.

Anthropologie: 'Carved Doily Clutch' - $298.

Gucci: 'Broadway' Evening Bag with Engraved Gucci Script Logo' - $1400.

Chico’s: 'Daydreamer Messenger Bag' - $69.

Burberry: 'Small Grainy Leather Crossbody Bag' - $850.

Gucci: 'handmade' medium shoulder bag with woven leather details and tassels with metal G and leather monkey fist details' - $2500.

Gucci: 'Handmade’ Large Top Handle Bag with Woven Web Detail' - $5300.

2011 Colors for Spring
As spring is quickly approaching, it is time to start preparing in the best way us fashionistas know how! When you think of spring colors, you may think of simple pastels. This season, you can say so long to that notion as you are saying so long to winter! Every year, Pantone makes an official list of the top ten colors for the year, and this year, pastels are out, and bold, joyful colors are in! Honeysuckle pink was at the top of that list, making it the 2011 Color of the Year, and what better time to start wearing it than in spring? Below is a list of Pantone’s Top Ten Colors of the Year, and a few examples of where you can find these colors around The Row!

Honeysuckle Urban Outfitters: Lazerade Pixie Dress - $69.

Anthropologie: Artful Asymmetry Top - $48.

Coral Rose Anthropologie: Pentapetal Ring - $38.
(We know that orange can be a tough color for many woman to wear, but don’t completely disregard it! Try a simple accessory instead of a solid orange top, like this adorable ring from Antrhopologie.)

Bees Wax Anthropologie: Sun Shades Dress - $158.
Yellow is another tricky color, but by breaking it up with stripes and choosing a darker, warmer yellow, almost anyone can pull off this shade.

Russet Anthropologie: Theodora Jacket - $148.

Chico’s: Angelic Denim Finn Jacket - $99.

Spring Fashion Trend: The Lace Saga Continues…
In case you were wondering: no, this is not the first you have heard about the lace trend, and it certainly won’t be the last! Sometimes, trends come along that we love too much to let go of. The current lace trend isn’t even beginning to die out; in fact, it is evolving. Now, not only is lace still huge, but crochet is making its way into our hearts as well. And because the shops at Santana Row are always on the brink of fashion, we have plenty of different lace and crochet looks to suite everyone’s styles.
White scoop-neck top – not very original, right? Wrong! One of the many great things about crochet is that it can turn any ordinary look into something extraordinary when it’s done right. Lace has the same effect. It doesn’t matter if there is a hint of lace or if your whole garment is lace, it definitely adds some excitement and beauty to your whole look. Below are some crochet and lace looks that you can find around The Row.

Urban Outfitters: Crochet Headwrap - $14

The Container Store: Top 5 Kitchen Clutter Areas
Commonly referred to as the “hub of the home,” our kitchens act as the central location of the house — where we ultimately gather to eat and socialize. With that said, we’ve compiled these organization tips for each area of the kitchen, to help save you time as you cook and to keep the “hub” looking in tip-top shape for your family and guests.

1. Countertops »
Oftentimes, our kitchen countertops evolve into cluttered storage spaces, leaving us little room for what it’s there for — cooking! In making this space over, keep functionality top of mind. Designate a space for food preparation — whether it is near the sink or the stove or both, commit to keeping a clear space on the counter for cooking at all times. Keep only the necessary items you use daily (coffee maker, can opener, utensil basket, etc.) out on your countertop. Anything not used frequently will only clutter your countertop.
2. Cabinets »
The biggest problem with kitchen cabinets is keeping things visible and accessible. Since cabinets are built so deep, add sliding drawers for lower cabinets, tiered stacking shelves for cabinets at eye level, and pull-down racks for hard-to-reach cabinets. Keep your most frequently used items up front.
3. Sink area »
One key tip for kitchen organization is to store things where we use them. Store sponges and scrubbies in a container that suctions to the side of your sink. Storing soap in pump dispenser not only looks great, it’s easy to use.
4. Drawers »
We are all guilty of drawer clutter. To keep things organized, use expandable or modular organizers and utilize every inch. Separate items by occasion — keeping your barbeque utensils separate from your products for entertaining. You can also choose to organize items is by shape, function and/or frequency.
5. Pantry »
The pantry is a great place for utilizing all storage space from the bottom up and grouping like items together on each shelf. In maximizing this space, don’t neglect the door — our elfa Door & Wall Rack is specially designed to fit onto the back of a door. The rack will ease the overcrowding on the shelves and make it possible to have everything at your fingertips. In grouping items, use shelf dividers and categorize things as you most often use them. Right now, elfa is on SALE during our Annual elfa Sale! Save 30% on elfa and installation, too! Sale ends Tuesday, February 15.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas at The Row
Valentine’s Day is rapidly approaching… Have you thought about what to do for your significant other yet? If not, don’t fret! Santana Row is here to help you with all your Valentine’s needs!
Guys, we know it’s always hard to think of something that will wow your girlfriend or wife. This year, leave the hard part to us and take one of our ideas! You could always go the easy route and get her jewelry. This is a great gift because, let’s face it, what girl doesn’t love jewelry? Instead of the same-old diamonds and hearts, get her a piece of jewelry that’s out of the ordinary that she will really love! Beau Bijou and Flying Lizard Designs are two stores in Santana Row that specialize in unique jewelry for all types of women. Or, if you have already worn out the jewelry card, something that most women want more than any gift is quality time with you. Take her to dinner, to the movies, or even to the Hotel Valencia for the night. Many of the restaurants at Santana Row are offering specials for Valentine’s Day, including pre-fixed menus, free champagne, and even a rose for your Valentine. Nothing is more romantic than a night you planned just for her at Santana Row with all the things she loves.
Girls, don’t get too excited: you’re not completely off the hook! Just because people think of Valentine’s Day as a day where men do things for women, why can’t you do something nice for the man in your life? Obviously, you aren’t going to get him flowers, jewelry, and chocolates, but that doesn’t mean you can’t surprise him with a gift from the heart! Even if it is something simple like a gift card to Best Buy, it shows that you care - what man would turn down the chance to buy electronics? But maybe you want to go all out for him this Valentine’s Day. Tell him ahead of time that you are planning something special for him instead of the other way around, and take him out to a romantic steak dinner at LB Steak and then to watch the movie of his choice at CineArts Theaters. He’ll be appreciative of the fact that you put thought into your evening and tried to show him how much he really means to you.
For more information about Valentine’s Day happenings at Santana Row, call the Concierge at (408)551-4611. No matter what you are planning, Santana Row is the one-stop-shopping destination for the Valentine in your life.

The Container Store: Turn a Closet Into a Home Office!
No room for a home office? You may be surprised to learn you can transform a small, reach-in hall closet or a spare bedroom closet into a functional workspace! Here’s how!
Step One
Remove the contents of the closet and evaluate what you have. Donate or discard items not used within the last two years. If possible, reassign everything else to another area of the home. If you are transforming an out-of-season closet, consider a freestanding garment rack to house your hanging clothes in the room, instead of in the closet.
Step Two
Take out the existing closet rod and shelf and apply a fresh coat of paint. Decide how you want your new office space to function and jot down ideas and measurements. Consider what you will need to have handy in the space: a printer, fax machine, filing cabinet, etc. It may be necessary to consult an electrician to have the space wired for an overhead light and/or electrical outlets.
Step Three
It’s a smart idea to install wall-mounted shelving that can take full advantage of the height of your wall for maximum storage. Our best-selling elfa Solid Shelving provides a comfortable work surface and storage above for supplies. Shelves are available in a wide variety of sizes to create a custom fit for your space. You can also choose from several finishes for an attractive work space. Save 30% on elfa and elfa Installation NOW during our Annual elfa Sale!
Step Four
A comfortable desk chair on wheels is easy to roll in and out of the closet and provides needed support for hours spent at the desk. Accessorize your new space with attractive storage boxes to keep extra supplies organized. If this will be a space shared between family members, be sure to give everyone his or her own space for reference materials and project storage.
When not in use, you can hide your space-savvy office by simply closing the closet door.

I’ve recently fallen in love with one of the most versatile tools in my industry: the flat iron. Don’t get me wrong, I love big, sexy, fluffy hair but I believe if the flatiron is used correctly in conjunction with the right products, you can have the best of both worlds; smooth and voluminous. But that’s not all this little tool can achieve.
Hair in its natural state is holds a positive static charge, which causes flyaways. A 100% ceramic flatiron (not just ceramic plated) holds a negative electrical charge (also known as negative ions). The positive and negative charges counteract each other causing the hair to lay flat.
Thermal forces also help to straighten and smooth the hair as well. The heat of the flat iron causes the protein bonds in the hair to temporarily restructure and straighten as the two plates of the flat iron is pressed and pulled through the hair. The flat iron is different from the curling iron in that it has two ceramic plates that are sources for heat whereas with a curling iron the only source of heat is the barrel. So, with two sources of heat as opposed to one, the hair is bound to be smoother and less frizzy with the flat iron.
Mechanical forces also help the hair to lay flat and smooth. The outer layer of a healthy hair strand (called the cuticle layer) normally lays flat like shingles on a roof, but if the hair has been colored or chemically treated too many times, the hair can look dull and frizzy due to the damaged outer layer. Curly or textured hair has an undulating surface, which, again, causes the cuticle layer to not lay flat. When you press the two plates of the flat iron together, the cuticle behaves itself and lies down flat, which will in turn reflect the light better, causing the hair to appear shinier and healthier.
Another wonderful little trick you can perform with the flat iron is to make beautiful shiny ribbon curls. Using the right combination of iron position and styling products, you can create luscious waves and curls with the twist of the wrist. And, you receive a smoother shiner look than using a curling iron because of the flat iron’s double heat source.
So, how much does this miraculous little tool cost? Flat irons range from as little as $15 to over $200. There are hundreds of models and brands on the market to choose from and people always ask me if cost makes a difference. My answer is the same; it’s an investment. You can buy a budget model, but it may not have 100% ceramic plates, which can mean an uneven heating element, resulting in more damage to the hair. You’ll probably have to replace the iron more often as well. I have had the same $150 professional flat iron for over five years now, and it’s been well worth the money. In the end it’s a decision you’ll have to make based on your budget and hair care needs.
The flat iron has so much to offer the world of hair care and styling. With all of its versatility and benefits I hope you’re able to get your hands on one soon. I’m happy to help you with a professional styling lesson at Atelier Salonspa in Santana Row. Our salon offers many services ranging from blowouts and flat iron services to Keratin Complex Smoothing treatments, which give you smoother, less frizzy hair for months instead of days. My only goal is to give you the hair of your dreams. And did I mention that I LOVE flat ironing hair? ![]()

A Closet Makeover by The Container Store
A Closet Makeover
A quick survey of your closet’s contents can reveal thousands of dollars worth of clothing, shoes and accessories. Given the time and money spent accumulating a personal wardrobe, taking time to store clothing properly, both to protect and prolong the life of your clothing, is a wise investment. Fortunately, redesigning closets to increase much-needed storage space can be a very simple process. By using a custom designed storage and organization system like elfa, closets can be transformed into multi-purpose areas, yielding up to 50 percent more usable space for a fraction of the cost of custom built-ins. Read these tips for making over your closet – and save 30% on elfa and elfa Installation NOW during our Annual elfa Sale!

Take Inventory
Begin by noting everything you would like to store in a particular closet. This includes hanging and folded clothing, shoes, accessories, linens and miscellaneous items, such as sporting equipment, luggage, gift wrap, etc.
Clean House
Donate or hold a garage sale for anything you don’t or can’t wear or use any more. Use the two-year rule — if you haven’t worn it in two years, it’s time to say goodbye to it. These items take up valuable space and probably won’t be missed.
Remove Barriers
If you have one lone closet rod at the top of your closet to hang your clothes on — remove it. One rod severely limits your ability to visualize available space and does not allow you to double-hang clothing. Measure your entire closet space from front to back, side to side and floor to ceiling. Note the height and width of doors and door frames, as well as the location of built-in shelves, fuse boxes, cables, ducts and other obstructions.
Use all of the Available Space
Select a closet system and completion products that maximize all of the available space, including vertical space from floor to ceiling and the often-wasted space behind the door. Take advantage of The Container Store’s FREE design services with elfa. Call 1-800-443-1264 to set up an in-store appointment to work with one of our expert designers!

Soup’s On! Check out Left Bank’s version of French Onion
We are all eating a lot of soup right now-It’s the thing to do during the winter when you are looking for a cozy meal. Of course, French onion soup, with its melted cheese-topped crouton, is the ultimate example of perfect soup to try. David Bastide serves the classic at San Jose's Left Bank Brasserie all winter long, garnished with baguette slices -- toasted with olive oil and salt -- and caramelized Emmenthal cheese that slowly melts into the soup.

Left Bank French Onion Soup Recipe
Serves 10-12
3 tablespoons olive oil
¼ pound butter
8 yellow onions, cut in half, then sliced ¼-inch thick
1 cup white wine
1 cup sherry
3 sprigs thyme
1 bay leaf
1 tablespoon peppercorns
1 quart chicken stock
2 quarts beef stock
Salt, pepper
Sliced baguettes
Olive oil
Emmenthal cheese, shredded, to garnish
Chives, minced, to garnish
1. Heat butter and oil in a large, heavy-bottomed soup pot. Add onions and cook, stirring occasionally, until caramelized.
2. Add white wine and sherry. Bring to boil, then reduce heat and simmer until reduced by half.
3. Tie the thyme, bay leaves and peppercorns in a square of cheesecloth to make a sachet. Add, along with stocks; simmer for 1 hour. Remove sachet from soup. Season to taste.
4. Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Brush baguette slices with olive oil, sprinkle with salt and pepper, and bake until crispy, 5-10 minutes.
5. To serve, fill warm soup bowls with onion soup, float two baguette croutons on top and add a generous sprinkling of cheese. Slide under the broiler and cook until the cheese melts and caramelizes. Garnish with chives
