Annual Summer Fashion Shows (with Vernon Davis!)

It’s that time of year again! Schools are getting out and weather is getting warmer, and with these changes, there is only one thing on our mind at the Row: the Summer Fashion Shows! Join us on Saturday, June 1st at either 1pm or 4pm for a fun, fashion-filled day to kick off your summer! And I really mean a full day of fun! The pre-parties will start at 1pm and 4pm depending on which show you are attending. We are starting things off right, with a beauty lounge, wine tastings, and champagne. Learn beauty tips and tricks while getting your hair and make-up touched at the Beauty barwith style experts from stores like Atelier AVEDA and Drybar. Then head over to taste some wines from local wineries such as Guglielmo and Fortino. When the show is about to begin, grab a seat, appetizers, and a glass of champagne and get settled in poolside to view the summer collections from the stores of Santana Row. (Don’t forget to keep your eye out for our very special guest/49er while you’re there!)

Don’t worry folks; once the show is over, the party doesn’t stop! Visit the stores around the Row that are hosting after parties (such as Cole Haan and the brand new Madewell) for more wine tastings, light bites, in-store discounts, and live DJs! Plus, if you attend all of the after party locations, you will be entered for the chance to win a $500 gift card to Santana Row!

Now, what if I was to tell you that tickets are only $40? It’s true! A day packed with food, wine, discounts, music, and of course, fashion can be yours for only $40! What are you waiting for? Tickets are available online (click here) or in the Concierge. Please call the Concierge at (408)551-4611 if you have any questions about the shows. We can’t wait to see you there!

Mother’s Day Gifts

What do you get the woman who has everything? I mean seriously, she has you as a daughter or son right?  All giggles aside, sometimes it really is hard finding the perfect gift for the perfect person who has always been your biggest fan, your counselor, your mentor, or your worst enemy turned into your best friend. Though we love Mom every day of the year, this day of celebration gives us another opportunity to show Mom just how much she really means to us.

In efforts to help some of you who may be having a rough time buckling down the perfect gift, I’ve found some plush items around The Row that many Moms would love more than anything. Well, maybe not more than you, but it would definitely remind them just how much you love them too!

Boutique Harajuku has beautiful summer gold plated titanium bracelets that are perfect arm candy for her to wear any time of the year.

They say a picture is worth a thousand words and what better than framing your favorite photo of you and Mom in this awesome blinged out Z Gallerie picture frame.

Or maybe your shopping for a Mom’s to be? They love being pampered too especially before they are the changing the pampers! H&M has an amazing selection for this time of the year to help show off her baby belly.

Outdoors Mom, don’t worry, Icebreaker Merino has got you covered. Their clothes are invented by nature and engineered for people, just like Mom. Their unique Merino wool apparel is made in the mountains, rather than a lab, the merino wool is renewable, recyclable and biodegradable too. Check out their selection of bright colors that are sure to make her smile bright this year.

Or maybe Mom would like a little rejuvenation and relaxation, check out the sweet stress relief package being offered by Atelier Aveda.

With endless choices at Santana Row, I am sure no matter what you find for Mom, she will love it because it’s from you!

It’s Sandal Season!

It’s warming up outside which always makes me want to SHOP! This is my favorite season to do just that, with the mix of colors, patterns, shorts, skirts, flow-y tops and strappy shoes! Really how can a girl go wrong right now?!? Personally, I am itching for the new pair of strappy sandals in any form, wedges flats or heels!

These strappy wedges from Donald J. Pliner are great! Paired with a pair of jeans and a white button blouse to dress it up or with your favorite light pencil skirt! A must have for any girls wardrobe.

How about these flat sandals from Cole Haan for a day at the beach in your cover-up or strolling through The Row on your way to a Sunday brunch in a maxi?

I LOVE the bow & spike detail on these flat sandals from Kate Spade, with shorts on the weekend or a skirt for work! They have just the right amount of dressy but casual!

Futuristic Trends of Spring

Everything is going metallic this spring, mainly because you can wear them in many ways for any shape, size and skin tone! This is a pretty futuristic alternative this spring compared to the classic floral prints and bright colors. However, this is still something you can mix in with those too, and for this trend let’s just say we LOVE the future! Check out some hot ticket items that are here around The Row to help you shine through this spring!

Perfect accent belt for this spring from LOFT, add it to your favorite neutrals or go bold with bright too!

A bold tone of a rose metallic, this is perfect to add for a sleek style from BCBGMAXAZRIA.

Love the small accent of Metal on these distressed pumps from Free People, pairs great with anything and still gives you a little small detail that creates a unique look.

Accessorize your eyewear with a Metallic frame that goes well with any wardrobe; check out these frames from Diesel.

Great metallic top from Urban Outfitters, paired with either classic denim or a bold color is perfect for a girls night out, or date night!

Have fun finding all things Metallic to add to your futurist style this Spring!

How classic is this suit from Ted Baker? Here is a suit that you just can’t go wrong in! (And it’s even cuter up close!) “Aliona”: Top $70, Bottom $65.

Don’t be afraid to branch out! This adorable one piece from Urban Outfitters is the perfect way to make a statement with a bathing suit without being too out there. “L Space Fringe One-Piece Swimsuit”: $132.

It’s April on the Row Like You’ve Never Seen!

April is going to be a busy month here at the Row! We are gearing up for a fun and fashionable spring with new events, fan favorite promotions, and the opening of new stores! Trust me, you will want to read what I have written below!

Lunch on the Row + a Show: This is one of our most popular (and one of my favorite) promotions here at Santana Row! Enjoy a $20 two-course lunch from one of our participating restaurants and then present your receipt to the Concierge to receive a free matinee movie ticket to the CineArts theatre on the Row! This promotion runs Monday-Wednesday now through the end of May. Enjoy a girl’s day, play hooky from work, or have a lunch date with that special someone! Whatever you do, don’t miss the opportunity to take advantage of this promo! For more information and to see participating restaurants, please click here.

Beauty Bash: Check out Santana Row’s newest event, Beauty Bash! This event, on April 24th from 6pm – 9pm is similar to the Wine & Dine’s you know and love from the Row, but is focused on all things beauty and benefits a great cause! Career Closet is a non-profit organization that gives all the women the opportunity to feel their most confident during a job interview with the right attire and advice. All the proceeds from Beauty Bash will benefit Career Closet. Beauty consultations, shopping incentives, goodies, a wine glass, and of course, wine are all included in the price of your ticket! Tickets are $15 and now on sale, or get your ticket for $10 with the donation of a gently used accessory. For more information, please click here.

Try It, Buy It, Vintner’s Marketplace: Another new event to come to Santana Row is the Try It, Buy It Marketplace! This event is being put on by the Santa Cruz Mountain Winegrowers Association and will be held in the Santana Row Park on April 21st from 1pm – 4pm. This event will have a similar feel to a farmer’s market, but all the booths will be different wineries from the Santa Cruz Mountains! Taste the wines at the booths, and if you find a wine you have to have, you can buy it on the spot! Admission is free but tastings are not, and tasting tickets can be purchased ahead of time or at the event. For more information, please click here.

Madewell Opening: The wait is over: mark your calendars for Madewell’s grand opening on the Row on April 24th! With all the buzz I have been hearing about this store, I definitely cannot wait to check it out. Plus, if you stop by opening day, receive a FREE polka dot pouch with your purchase (while supplies last)! Check out the brand ahead of time at www.madewell.com and start getting excited!

For more information on anything you have read, please feel free to call the Santana Row Concierge at (408)551-4611. Happy April!

Have you heard the tale of Bridezilla?

Have you heard the tale of Bridezilla?

A sweet bride turns into a raging terror--created by combining stress, emotions, excitement and the perfectionistic obsession of having the perfect wedding day.  It’s the stuff of nightmares…and reality TV.

Planning a wedding can be stressful. Believe me, I know.  My name is Kristy, and I’m the Wedding Coordinator at Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio.  I have worked as a Wedding Planner, and I happen to also be a Bride-to-Be, planning my own wedding.  So I feel your pain, and I want to help make your special day and the journey leading up to it, as pain-free as possible.

A wedding is THE big day. While you’re obsessing over the small details of ceremony: music, decorations, seating arrangements, and centerpieces; everyone is thinking about how fun it’s going to be to celebrate your special day and how stunning you will look. That’s right, did you forget? You’re going to be breathtakingly jaw-dropping gorgeous! Whether you’re a low-key kind of bride or planning to outshine The Royal Wedding, there are important beauty regimens and appointments to set in stone before you walk down the aisle.   The best way to beat Bridezilla is to be organized.  Let’s start with a pre-event schedule:

9-12 Months before

Find your beauty team.  I’m lucky that I work at the top salon in the Bay Area –Atelier—so I didn’t have to look far to find my bridal day beauty crew.  Great sources for referrals to your own dream team are your wedding venue, your photographer, or your recently married friends.  Book a short consultation with a couple of stylists to meet them and see if you ‘click’.  The hair and makeup artist are important to your photo album—you’ll want to look your absolute best and be comfortable with the stylist you choose.

Reserve your wedding day hair and makeup for yourself and your bridal party. Be sure to start your research and have photos to give your hair and makeup artists some inspiration.

6 Months Before

Working backwards from the big day, pre-book all of the necessary appointments up until your wedding day, such as nail care, waxing, facials, and of course, your hair. Whether you’re looking for a dramatic change, need to grow some length or have to get your hair into better condition, plan ahead--it might take a few appointments to achieve your look.

Schedule a facial and get one every 4-6 weeks until a week before the wedding to be sure your skin is radiant. Make sure you take home products to keep your skin healthy and looking great between appointments.  Pre-booking ensures you aren’t scrambling to get in with an in-demand stylist or esthetician at the last minute.  That’s not relaxing for anyone!

3 Months Before

Schedule your Wedding Hair and Wedding Makeup Trials. If you’re having photos done or have any pre-wedding parties, it’s nice to schedule for the same day. Your hair and makeup will look great. If not, it’s also a great reason for a nice date night with your fiancé!

1-2 Months Before

Start your waxing/hair removal treatments, and pre-book those appointments too.  You have so much to get done before your special day—it’s nice to get a few beauty breaks into your hectic schedule.

Be sure your Bridal Party schedules trials, if necessary, too.  Chances are they’ll all have different needs, and getting everything “tested out” and perfected prior, will help things go smoother on the day of. (I heard Bridesmaid-zilla is just as scary!)

2-3 Weeks Before

Treat yourself to a well-deserved day of pampering and relaxing, since next week will be hectic. Try to squeeze in a massage if you can.

We know you’re going to be in tip-top beauty shape, but how about your Groom? Make sure he goes and gets his haircut too.

1 Week Before

Go in for your final waxing/hair removal appointments. You may consider adding an Eyelash Tint, Eyebrow Tint or Eyelash Extension service too. Talk to your stylist to see if those are good options for you. Time to go in for your final color and cut services.

1 Day Before

Get your manicure and pedicure. What condition are your Groom’s hands in? Keep in mind that your photographer will most likely take photos of both of your hands and rings. Your groom should probably join in on the nail services.

The best beauty tip I can give you, is…get plenty of sleep.  No amount of makeup can hide a sleepless night.

Wedding Day

At last, THE day has arrived.  It goes by so fast, so enjoy this day, which is all about you and your future spouse.  Relax… all you have to do is sit and have your hair and makeup done, put on your special dress, and exchange vows with your Prince Charming.  Then enjoy the party with your friends and family.  (That’s what I’m looking forward to!)

I have two simple tips that are the key to defusing Bridezilla:

1 – Stay organized, don’t procrastinate, and DELEGATE! Your bridesmaids are there to help you.  I know I couldn’t have planned my wedding without my besties.

2 – Keep up with your beauty appointments and at-home regimens. If you look good, you’ll feel good.

Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio can handle all beauty aspects of your Wedding Day or Special Occasion. We have a variety of hair and makeup experts that can bring your bridal vision to life. You’ll have so much on your plate; let us help you make it a relaxing, fabulous, and fun experience.

Bridezilla?  Not if we can help it!

Happy Wedding!

Lively Emeralds

Emerald, a lively, radiant, lush green, and is also the Color of the Year for 2013. A color of elegance and beauty, it enhances our sense of well-being, balance and harmony. In honor of this color, and well, St. Patrick’s Day being this Sunday too, I’ve found some items you might like to add to bring its entire aura into your wardrobe and life, and also prevent you from getting pinched too!

Stretch gold tone bracelet with round emerald stones from Jest Jewels.

Stylish emerald green distressed leather bomber jacket with detachable acid-washed hood from Free People.

A versatile fitted V-neck dress in lustrous stretch fabric that can be found inside H&M.

And if you haven’t caught the latest flick, I suggest picking up tickets to CineArts to enhance your visuals with Oz The Great and Powerful (I highly recommend 3D) as the Land is Oz is a land of colors, and Emerald City is stunning! Click here for show times and tickets.

High West Whiskey Week at LB Steak

High West Whiskey Week at LB Steak

Monday, March 18th through Saturday, March 23rd

George Bernard Shaw called it “liquid sunshine.” Johnny Carson equated it with happiness. James Joyce poeticized the sound as it falls into a glass. Mark Twain aptly observed that “Too much of anything is bad, but too much of good whiskey is barely enough.” Whiskey lovers, you’re in good company!

Visit LB Steak for High West Whiskey specialty cocktails, whiskey flights, and whiskey-infused menu additions designed by Chef de Cuisine Thomas Ricci.

High West Whiskey’s very own Mat Garretson will join guests at LB Steak the evening of Saturday, March 23rd to share a bit of his whiskey wisdom.

Springing Forward

Its daylight savings this weekend, and this ensures the perks of more sunlight later in the evening and an indication that Spring is just around the corner! The larger reason for shifting our clocks forward is energy conservation. So in the grand scheme of things let me help you to conserve some energy by sharing a few fashion forward trends you’ll love to add to your Spring 2013 wardrobe!

Patterns & Prints like kate spade new york’s broome street spring gingham capri’s.

Pops of bright hues like LOFT piped pleated skirt dress.

Statement jewelry like this piece found at H&M.

A neutral toned hat is perfect for early spring, like this one from Anthropologie.

A wedge designed with a pop of gold to add some pizazz like the Irving Wedge at Cole Haan.

Continuing with the pattern trend, a good clutch is a must, love this one from Furla.

Happy Springing!

Organize Your Workspace

Is your desktop a disaster? Don’t waste productive time searching through piles or for your favorite pen — get organized and you’ll be amazed at how much you can accomplish in a single day! Follow these simple steps to create order on your desktop:

Compartmentalize

Since a significant amount of time is spent sitting behind a desk or in front of a computer, design your work area so that there’s a place for everything and that the telephone, notepads, pens, pencils and appointment book are at your fingertips. Place additional resources — but only those that are essential — within easy reach. This will minimize movement and allow you to be more productive.

De-clutterize

To prevent unnecessary clutter — and wasted time — limit the amount of items on your desk. Enter deadlines and notes directly into your phone, calendar or personal planner. This will prevent little scraps of paper from piling up on your desk.

Categorize

Categorize files into two categories: active and inactive. Keep active files accessible (on your desk, in a rolling file cart or in a filing cabinet) and store inactive files in a labeledstorage box. This will reduce time spent rummaging through a huge stack of files that may not be current.

Utilize

Don’t forget to utilize the often-wasted space available behind the door or on the wall over your desk. Using products such as wall-mounted grids or over-the-door hanging storage racks to hold desk accessories, magazines, CDs or DVDs will optimize limited workspace.

Minimize

Reading a document over and over can waste valuable time. Minimize the number of times a document is read by immediately filing, discarding or placing the items in a “to do” file. The amount of paperwork on your desk will be greatly reduced by making this a part of your daily routine.

It’s Finally Here… the Wine & Dine Around!

If you are a fan of Santana Row, wine, and supporting a great cause, then this is the perfect event for you! It is time once again for Santana Row’s annual Wine and Dine Around benefiting the American Heart Association! On February 16th from 2pm-5pm, don’t miss the opportunity to have a blast while enjoying delicious, local wine and supporting a great organization.

Twenty stores and restaurants on the Row will be hosting local wineries and providing exclusive discounts and light bites. Your $30 ticket will include wine and food tastings, special offers, and a signature Santana Row wine glass.

Personally, my favorite part about the event is that 100% of the proceeds go to the American Heart Association! It’s not just a fun event; it’s one with a purpose.

To buy your tickets to the event, either visit the Santana Row Concierge (accepts cash only!) or click here to purchase them online. Remember, you must be 21 and over for the event, and bring your ID because we will be checking! For more information or if you have questions, please call the Concierge at (408)551-4611. See you on the 16th!

Storing Your Handbags

For many women, handbags are an integral part of their wardrobe. With so many shapes and sizes, it can be a little tricky to keep them organized and well-protected. Follow these smart tips from the experts at The Container Store for handbag organization in your closet.

Don’t forget to visit The Container Store soon to enjoy FREE design services for your closet (including your handbags!) during their Annual elfa Sale. Hurry, the sale ends Tuesday, February 12, 2013.

Set a Game Plan

Depending on your space, you’ll need to decide where you are able to store your handbags. In a closet, look at shelf space, closet rod and open wall space. Keep the bags you’re using most frequently within easy reach and easy sight. Special occasion bags or those used less frequently can be stored in clear or labeled storage boxes — or even in out of the way places such as under the bed.

Protection is Key

To preserve their shape, stuff bags that will be stored long-term with acid-free tissue paper to preserve the shape. Bags made of natural fibers and leather should always be stored in a climate-controlled environment. If your bag didn’t include a dust cover for storage, store it in a pillowcase for protection.

Clutches

Because of they’re smaller size, many clutches are ideal for storing in a hanging shoe bag or stackable shoe racks. You can store one or two in each compartment so they’re protected and easy to see.

Shoulder Bags

You can choose to store bags with straps either in bins on a closet shelf, hooks on a closet rod or on hooks mounted to a wall. If hanging, please note that over time, the hook may damage the strap, so make sure only handbags you’re using and swapping out frequently are stored this way.

Saint Vincent’s Wine Flight Week at LB Steak

Saint Vincent’s Wine Flight Week at LB Steak

Monday, January 21st-Friday, January 25th

Burgundy winegrowers celebrate Saint Vincent this time of year because he's the Patron Saint of one of LB Steak’s favorite things...WINE!

Join LB Steak for an intriguing selection of wine flights as designed by Wine Director and Master Sommelier Eric Entrikin. Begin with an Old World selection from a cooler climate, and sip your way to warmer regions in the New World. Pair your flight of choice with one of LB Steak’s meaty menu items for the ultimate gastronomic experience!

Origins of Saint Vincent’s Day

Legends as to the origins of the celebration held in Burgundy each year vary. Some contend that one day Saint Vincent stopped at a vineyard to chat with one of the wine growers. While he was engaged in conversation, Saint Vincent’s donkey began nibbling at young shoots on the surrounding vines. The following year, the wine grower benefitted from a far more productive harvest, for Saint Vincent’s donkey had invented the art of vine pruning. This may be the reason why the celebration in Burgundy generally falls in the last week of January, the time when pruning traditionally begins.

Jewelry Organization

Overwhelmingly customers tell us that organizing their jewelry collection is a top priority. Here are a few tips from The Container Store for keeping everything from chandelier earrings to bangles neat and organized.

Keep items in sight

Beat the morning rush by keeping jewelry organized in such a way that it’s easy to see your everyday pieces, such as countertop accessories, organizers that hang from closet rods or racks mounted to the wall. Special occasion pieces can be stored elsewhere, out of sight so they remain protected from dust.

Necklaces

It’s best to store necklaces individually so that they don’t get tangled (this will also help you spot the one you’re looking for more easily.) Depending on your space, consider hanging them from a freestanding holder or from a small peg rack mounted to the wall.

Bracelets

Because they don’t tangle as easily as necklaces, you can choose to hang bracelets from countertop organizers or compartmentalize them in drawers or trays.

Bangles

Oversized, chunky bangles can pose a storage challenge because they don’t fit in standard sized jewelry boxes or trays. Consider using a paper towel holder that you can use to store them in a stack!

Earrings

You definitely want to keep earrings stored in their own compartments, either in a drawer or an organizer that hangs from a hook or closet rod. Dangly earrings are best stored in a way that allows them to hang freely. Keep a stash of extra earring backs close by for emergencies.

Visit The Container Store today to take advantage of their FREE design services with elfa, the premier shelving and drawer system, to organize your jewelry within a beautifully organized closet! Now save 30% OFF elfa® and 30% OFF Installation, during The Container Store’s Annual elfa® Sale!

Why should you use styling products?

Did you know that the best reason to use styling product on your hair is to protect it from the heat of your blowdryer? Sure, we also use it to detangle, smooth, and control our style, but blowdryers and hot tools like flat irons and curling irons can break down even the strongest of hair textures. A product like Aveda's Damage Control is made to protect against heat styling, but even the Style-Prep product, like Smooth Infusion, Be Curly, and Pure Abundance preps give the hair an extra layer of protection. The shine you get is a bonus! Ask your Atelier Artist about the right product for your hair type.  Atelier Artists are Aveda experts!

Planning Your Closet Makeover

A quick survey of your closet’s contents can reveal thousands of dollars worth of clothing, shoes and accessories. Given the time and money spent accumulating a personal wardrobe, taking time to store clothing properly, both to protect and prolong the life of your clothing, is a wise investment.

Fortunately, redesigning closets to increase much-needed storage space can be a very simple process. By using a custom designed storage and organization system like The Container Store’s elfa® shelving and drawers, closets can be transformed into multi-purpose areas, yielding up to 50 percent more usable space for a fraction of the cost of custom built-ins.

And now, enjoy 30% OFF elfa® and 30% OFF Installation, during The Container Store’s Annual elfa® Sale!

Take Inventory

Begin by noting everything you would like to store in a particular closet. This includes hanging and folded clothing, shoes, accessories, linens and miscellaneous items, such as sporting equipment, luggage, gift wrap, etc.

Clean House

Donate or hold a garage sale for anything you don’t or can’t wear or use any more. Use the two-year rule — if you haven’t worn it in two years, it’s time to say goodbye to it. These items take up valuable space and probably won’t be missed.

Remove Barriers

If you have one lone closet rod at the top of your closet to hang your clothes on — remove it. One rod severely limits your ability to visualize available space and does not allow you to double-hang clothing. Measure your entire closet space from front to back, side to side and floor to ceiling. Note the height and width of doors and door frames, as well as the location of built-in shelves, fuse boxes, cables, ducts and other obstructions.

Use all of the Available Space

Be sure to select a closet system and completion products that maximize all of the available space, including vertical space from floor to ceiling and the often-wasted space behind the door

Holiday Storage Tips From The Container Store

After the guests have gone and the fruitcake is finished, it’s time to start thinking about storing your holiday trimmings. With a little planning, you can ensure your holiday decorations — and the investment you’ve made in them — are protected for years to come.

  • Be mindful of where you’re storing items. Wreaths, artificial trees and some ornaments are fine to store in a garage or attic. Choose sturdy plastic boxes that can be stacked or bags you can hang on the wall to protect items against dust, dirt and bugs.
  • Store delicate items such as candles, handmade or other valuable ornaments, in a climate controlled room. Ornaments made with natural materials (such as paper, or kid’s craft projects with dried food, pasta, etc.) should always be kept in airtight containers to keep pests away. Archival storage boxes protect items made from natural fibers from yellowing.
  • Storing items in clear containers enables you to see what’s inside. A container in traditional holiday colors also helps to quickly identify what’s inside. Label the contents clearly before storing. You may take a photo of how items are arranged and store it in the box so you know where everything goes next year.
  • Use dividers for ornaments and fragile items to prevent items from breaking. For especially delicate items or odd-shaped items, bubble wrap or packing paper provides extra cushion.
  • To keep from untangling yards of lights next year, wrap lights and garland securely around spools so they are easy to unwind next year.
  • Separating your decor by category into different boxes makes decorating and packing up easier for everyone. Each family member can then be responsible for one area of the house or one particular task — this kind of team work makes clean up quick and simple!
  • Wrapping paper is best stored in a closet or under a bed to protect it from dust and the elements. Keep tape and scissors stored with the gift wrap and ribbons and you’ll have everything you need to start wrapping again next year at your fingertips.

Halloween on the Row

Santana Row is the place to be for this year’s Halloween! Do you want to take your little ones for a fun Halloween adventure, or do you want to have a little fun and celebrate Halloween yourself? This year, we will be having fun Halloween events for both kids and adults.

For the kids: Our monthly “Mommy and Me on the Row” event in October is all about Halloween! Bring your young children to Santana Row on Tuesday, October 30th from 10am-noon for a fun morning of trick-or-treating on the Row! Dress up and go store to store getting candy for the little ones, while mommies (and daddies, too!) can have a peek at what’s new on the Row for fall! There will also be pumpkin decorating and Halloween photos in the Park Valencia. This is a perfect opportunity to celebrate Halloween with your little ones that you both can enjoy!

For the grown-ups: Halloween isn’t just a holiday for children! It’s also a chance for adults to assume another character and cut loose! Even though Halloween is on a Wednesday this year, Santana Row is still down to have a good time! The 3rd annual Halloween pub crawl will be taking place on Halloween night. The event will flow from Hot Tamales from 7pm-8pm to Strait’s from 8pm-9pm to Rosie McCann’s from 9pm-11pm, and finally it will end at Blowfish Sushi from 11pm-1:30am. There are going to be unique and fun things happening inside each stop, so come prepared to have some fun! Being the last stop of the night, Blowfish will be having a costume contest. Don’t forget to dress to impress and you can win some awesome prizes!

Hurry In and Check Out The Container Store’s Annual Shelving Sale

Are you overwhelmed by disorganization in your home? Some families deal with disarray in every room of their homes, and don’t always know how to remedy it. Need a simple, sure-fire fix, without adding on to your home? Think vertically with a shelving solution! The Container Store is hosting its Annual Shelving Sale — all shelving is 25% off, and elfa installation is 25% off, too!  Follow these helpful guidelines to see how shelving solutions can instantly create space in every area of your home.

Kitchen

A common problem in kitchens is the lack of space for storing things like cookbooks, not-often-used appliances and serving bowls. This is especially difficult if you have a minimum of cabinet space. A freestanding shelving unit that fits into a corner of your kitchen or against a wall can accommodate oversized items, keeping them accessible, while freeing up cabinet and counter space for regularly used items.

Mudroom/Entryway

Items like book bags, shoes, umbrellas, jackets — even sports equipment — inevitably pile up right next to the door that everyone in the family enters. Add a shelving solution to corral all of those items and keep the entryway clutter free. Add a hanging rod for coats and jackets and hooks for umbrellas and backpacks. Setting up a system like this near your main door will also help reduce clutter spreading to other areas of the home.

Den/Family Room

As more and more families are spending more time surfing the Web for everything from ordering take-out food to researching movie show times, it’s helpful to create a computing station that family members can easily access. Shelving solutions are available in attractive finishes to complement your home’s décor and you can create a highly efficient, space-saving station by thinking vertically. Use shelves above for storage in attractive boxes.

Bathroom

Make an immediate impact on the organization and appearance of your bathroom by removing items from the countertop and storing them on wall-mounted shelves instead. Wall-mounted shelves are available in a variety of fashionable materials and look great while organizing your toiletries and other bath necessities. Corner shelves are ideal for super small bathrooms.

Garage

Make room for two cars in your two-car garage by maximizing the full potential of the wall space with shelving. Getting items up off of the garage floor will make a tremendous impact on the amount of space you save. Look for modular shelves to hold lawn and garden equipment, tools and car supplies. Add hooks and tool racks to complement your shelving solution.

Attic

A freestanding shelving solution divides the limited space you have in an attic for the most efficient storage of out of season items. When you store items on shelves rather than stacking boxes directly on top of each other, it’s much easier to access selected items.

10 Year Anniversary Benefit Weekend

Ten years ago, when Santana Row was initially being built, a huge fire ripped through what is now the Santana Heights block. 11 fire alarms were dispatched and 221 fire fighters came to the scene. When the fire was finally squelched, Santana Row was devastated by $90 million worth in damages, but thankfully no deaths and few injuries. Without San Jose firefighters coming to the rescue, the damages would have been drastically higher. There was even the possibility of the gas station across the street catching fire, which would have cost this San Jose neighborhood many lives and millions more in damages. Santana Row has always been immensely grateful for the San Jose Fire Department and how they saved the property. To show our appreciation on this, the tenth anniversary of the event, some Santana Row stores and restaurants will be offering discounts to shoppers, while others will donate 10% of their proceeds to the San Jose Fire Department’s Public Education and Community Relations Trust. Come to the Row to get your shopping done and show your support for our local heroes this weekend, September 29th and 30th. Below is a list of all the specials that will be offered this weekend. Guest of a Wedding?

You’ve been invited to a wedding… Now what? Finding the right thing to wear to a wedding is a tricky thing. It depends on the time and location of the event, the time of year, your relation to the bride and groom, and what the invitation has specified. Some general rules of thumb for all weddings you attend: avoid white, avoid black, and never upstage the bride! Below are some tips for daytime, nighttime, and in-between weddings with some appropriate and beautiful dresses from the one and only Santana Row!

For a morning or afternoon wedding, the dress is usually more casual. This is also true for a backyard wedding. A flowy, summer day dress or an airy maxi dress are both perfect for these types of weddings. Wear heels and accessories to dress it up a little, or cute sandals and unassuming earrings for a more simple approach.

Ted Baker: “Florah – Printed Maxi Dress” - $420.

Free People: “Floral Print Daisy Fit and Flare” - $148.

For a wedding that is in the late afternoon or early evening, you need something in between! You can’t be too casual since the celebration will likely go on into the night, and you can’t be too dressy since it starts a little earlier. There is a fine line between the two! Here are some of my recommendations from the Row that perfectly bridge that gap.

Pink Stripes - $64.

BCBG: “Daphine Bustier-Bodice Cocktail Dress” - $268. (The belt does not come with the dress, but I love the look!)

Girls always want an excuse to dress up, and now you have one: an evening wedding! Although I said to avoid black, it has become socially acceptable to wear black (note: little black dress) to an evening wedding. Choose a cocktail dress that plays to you’re ready to go! Just remember, not too revealing – it’s still a wedding after all!

BCBG: “Moselle Strapless Peplum Cocktail Dress” - $338. (How cute would this dress be for a black tie wedding with a metallic belt and some chunky bangles?)

Urban Outfitters: “Lovers & Friends Love Knocks Dress” - $180.

Are You Struggling With Frizzy Hair?

Are you struggling with frizzy hair?  Does your hair take you a long time to smooth out because of its texture?  Are you having a daily negotiation with your hair?

Atelier Senior Artist, Nancy Montes, can make your life easier by tackling your hair challenges ‘head on’.  Nancy is an early graduate of the Atelier Academy, and over the past eight years, Nancy has been one of Atelier’s hair artists, and developed a specialty in what we like to call ‘hair texture management’.

After a detailed consultation, Nancy will recommend either a permanent relaxing of the unruly or frizzy texture or a more semi-permanent solution, after an analysis of your hair and some discussion about your needs and your hair history.

Nancy says, “I work with the Aveda Texture Smoothing System as well as with the Coppola Keratin Complex system, and depending on what you want, and what your hair needs, we’ll set up a plan.  If you are flat ironing your hair everyday, one of these services is going to save you valuable time, limit the damage a hot iron can cause, and give you the shiny, beautifully smooth hair you’ve been dreaming of.”

If you’ve ever wished you could just wash your hair and go, or even cut your styling time in half, a straightening system could be the answer to your hair wishes.

Call Atelier to schedule your consultation with Nancy Montes.  And get ready for the hair you’ve always wanted.  408-244-4222

Fashion’s Night Out and Atelier

Fashion’s Night Out is coming up this Thursday night, and the excitement is building all over the fashion world.  Of course, Santana Row is THE hub of fashion and special events in the Bay Area, and is having their own FNO event for the second year.

Atelier is proud and excited to be the beauty team chosen to provide hair and makeup for the runway models for the second time.  Our goal with any fashion show is to create a hair and makeup look that will stand up to the temperature, wind, and multiple clothing changes, especially necklines pulled over the head.  Our beauty concept has to be ‘bullet-proof’, and not collapse under any amount of perspiration or precipitation.

This year, we are taking the very popular braid trend and upscaling it for the runway.  A deep side part and a braided bun with a tightly wrapped finish will create a low profile head shape, and keep the nape clear for the coat collars and embellishments that are the essence of the fall and winter fashions.  We’ll use Aveda Control Paste to smooth the hair and give it a low shine finish.  Control Force, Aveda’s firm hold aerosol spray, will hold all the hair in place.  We’ll use it for in-between scene touchups as needed.

For our makeup look, we’re embracing Aveda’s Passion Flower Fall/Winter collection, and using one of the bolder colors on the eye with a lot of exaggeration.  It takes a dramatic amount of color to be seen on the runway.  On cheeks, a warm glow, and on lips, a glossy nude.  With the bold pop of color on the eye, we don’t want to compete with any color on the lip.  Runway makeup isn’t the same as street makeup, so we go big with it for shows.

Prep time with each model is short, and precious.  We may only have an hour or less to create both hair and makeup looks on up to 16 models.  So we work in teams, and find ways to work quickly to get the model back into the clothing tent to get ready for her first scene on the runway.  For this event, Atelier’s beauty team will be made up of 16 artists, many of whom will do both hair and makeup.  We are pleased to be welcoming the Academy for Salon Professionals from Santa Clara to our beauty team for Santana Row’s Fashion’s Night Out.  One of Atelier’s core values is education, and we love to mentor new artists.

With any fashion event, our mantra is, Feature the Fashion.  Creating a consistent look model-to-model takes the focus off of our work and onto the designer’s creations where it belongs.  We are so proud of what we do, but in reality, all eyes need to be on the clothing.

About Fashion’s Night Out at Santana Row:

Clothing featured will be from a combination of Santana Row stores, as well as Michael Costello of Project Runway and Diego, a young, talented fashion designer from the Bay Area.

Santana Row has created a 356 ft. long runway that spans the full block between Brooks Brothers and Gucci on the main boulevard.  It’s one of the longest runways in the country.  The main objective is to feature the fashion looks, and the mission of the beauty team is to create a hair and makeup concept that will stand up to the many steps each model with take on this very long runway.

Let’s take a look at the stats:

356 ft. long runway

10 ‘scenes’, each one showcasing a different Santana Row store or designer

20 round-trips, totaling 712 feet

Time it will take to walk each round trip on this extra long runway: 3.5 minutes

Average time it takes to walk the standard fashion runway: 30 seconds

Average heel height of the shoes the female models will be wearing: 4-5 inches

So, we can calculate a few things:

Each model will walk close to 2 ¾ miles during Fashion's Night Out.  That doesn’t include time to walk back and forth to the clothing tent to change.

Each model will spend 1 hour and 10 minutes walking on 4-5 inch heels, with only 1 short break.

That’s no small feat, although the models for this event, from Halvorson Model Management, are so professional, they make it all look easy.

Let's face it, at Santana Row’s Fashion’s Night Out, the fashion may be the feature, but the models are really the superstars!

Speaking of superstars, there are so many unsung heroes (and sheroes) behind the scenes at fashion shows of this size.  It literally takes a village to put an event like this together.  There’s the marketing and facilities teams from Santana Row, and the aforementioned hair and makeup crew, but the big credit goes to the production team.  In this case, the amazing Red Haute and Co. absolutely need to be congratulated on the fantastic job they do.  Led by the dynamic Beverly Zeiss, the Red Haute team is a shining example of teamwork and dedication to a job well done.  With so many moving parts to an event, it’s critical to have all hands on deck know what to do, how to do it, and keep it all running on time and looking great.  For Red Haute and Co., this is their standard operating procedure.  When they are the production team, the show gets done right.

All in all, putting together Fashion’s Night Out takes more than some trendy clothes—it takes skill, passion, talent, energy, stamina, and focus.  But it’s all well worth the effort and time when it comes time for the show to start.  Come take a look at the results at Fashion’s Night Out, Thursday, Sept. 6th, 6-10pm at Santana Row.

Four Fall Essentials

I can’t believe I am already saying this, but it seems that autumn is almost upon us. With just one month to go until it is officially fall, we fashionistas have to make sure we are prepared! There are four items that will be essential in your wardrobe this fall: a versatile jacket, boots that love your feet, skinny jeans to wear with everything, and that special accessory that you adore. As always, Santana Row is here to make sure that you don’t start the season without the essentials.

Jacket: An obviously necessary piece for fall. Keep warm and look great with a jacket that will go with everything!

Urban Outfitters: “BDG Dolman Utility Jacket” - $89.

Boots: Not only are boots great for when the weather starts to turn, but they continue to be great all throughout winter. When you find one pair of boots that feel as if they are meant for your feet, you are set for the year.

Cole Haan – “Hollis Boot” - $398.

Burberry – “Check Lined Leather Boots” - $795.

Skinny jeans: Skinny jeans are perfect to wear with everything in the Fall and Winter.

Urban Outfitters: “BDG Twig High-Rise Jeans” – (only) $39!

Your New Favorite Accessory: It is necessary in my opinion to own at least one item in your wardrobe that you are madly in love with. I’m sure you know what I mean – a piece that you are excited to wear every time and makes you feel like a million bucks, even if it was inexpensive!

Anthropologie: “Ikat Saturation Loop” - $38.

Warm Weather Makeup Tips From Atelier Salonspa

When the weather turns toasty, your makeup can melt faster than an ice cube on a hot sidewalk. Consider these useful tips from Atelier Salonspa at Santana Row to keep your makeup melt-free.

  1. Use an all-in-one foundation, like Aveda's inner light™ mineral tinted moisturizer spf 15, which is oil-free and radiance0infused.
  2. For oily skin, set your foundation with a lighter-than-air powder, to reduce shine and keep your foundation from softening up in the heat.
  3. Use eyeshadow instead of eye pencil to define eyes and brows. Aveda's color options™ eye shadow transformer turns powder eye shadow into a cream, or transforms shadow into vibrant liquid liner that defies the heat. Use eye or brow shadow dry to define brow.
  4. Always use powder blush or bronzer, never a cream formula when the temperature rises.
  5. Remember that lips need sun protection too. Lipstick can offer a bit of protection from the sun's rays by covering delicate lip surfaces with color and moisture.

Tame your curls or wear them natural—that is the question!

Whichever your desire, I can help you achieve the hair of your dreams.

My family and I moved to California from the Southeast U.S. and fell in love with the sandy beaches of Santa Cruz.  My whole family has naturally curly hair, so it is definitely a texture I have experience with and am comfortable working with.

Whether it’s a cut to enhance your curly locks or finding the best way to wear your hair smooth, I’ll teach you how to achieve your look.

If it’s color you are looking for, it’s important that a colorist knows how color reflects the light to bring shine to your curls.

As far as styling, did you know that drying your curly hair too much with a towel makes it frizz? Try just using paper towels to gently squeeze the water from your hair.  I prefer to let the water and Aveda's Be Curly products work their magic for soft curls with smooth shine.

If you’ve been searching for a curly hair specialist, you’ve found me!

I hope to see you at Atelier Studio soon.

Be Inspired,

Cindy Urbany

Skin Care from Atelier AVEDA

Wrinkles--everyone's focused on hiding them, erasing them, even filling them, but take a look at a college student's skin and skin over 50, and the big difference is pigment.  Years of UV exposure show up as splotches, mottled skin tone, and uneven coloration.  Studies have shown that this type of skin appears more old to us than wrinkles.  You can go the laser route, which is painful, expensive, and has some uncomfortable and unsightly after effects, or try the Aveda Enbrightenment Skincare System.

*Helps protect skin from environmental aggressors.

*Provides lightweight moisture to skin.

*100% naturally derived Plant-Powered Brightening Blend including Ascorbyl Glucoside (a vitamin C derivative), mulberry root, and grape extracts to help diminish the appearance of discoloration and dark spots.

*Anti-oxidants, including Rosemary and Vitamin E, help protect skin against environmental aggressors.

*Shea butter and bio-fermented hyaluronic acid moisturize.

*A soothing aroma made predominantly with organic lavender, sustainably sourced sandalwood, organic rose geranium and organic rosemary essential oils also helps soothe and calm the skin.

*Clinically proven to improve skin's clarity by 52% and diminish the appearance of dark spots by 34%.

Kick off your enbrightening journey with an Enbrightenment facial at Atelier Salonspa, then continue to fade blotches and spots with your home care system.  Call us for your appointment with our Aveda certified esthetician.  408-244-4222

Are you negotiating with your hair?

Cowlicks, growth patterns, whorls, widow's peak, whatever you call those annoying misbehaviors in your hairstyle, the fact is, they make styling your hair impossible. Here's a tip for getting your bangs to lie flat, even if you have some funky bends and parts in the front of your hairline.

On wet, clean hair, apply your styling prep and gel of choice.  At Atelier Salonspa and Atelier Studio, the Aveda salons at Santana Row, we love Aveda's Style-Prep Smoother mixed with Aveda Confixor gel.  Apply throughout hair, comb through to distribute.  Using blowdryer and hands, get hair about 90% dry. Use any multi-row plastic bristle or boar bristle brush (we prefer using a Denman brush), start wrapping the bangs across your forehead, from left to right, then from right to left, downwards onto your forehead.  Once the bangs are warmed up, put the brush and blowdryer down and hold your bangs down flat on your forehead using the palm of one hand.  Hold them down like that until they cool down.  Remove hand, and you'll see that they have decided that you're the boss and they will behave today!  If you want a bit of a bend in the hair or for the ends to turn under, use an appropriate-sized round brush to just turn the hair under.

Now you have a new trick to use to control your hair!

High-Low Hemlines

One of the most popular styles for the summer is the high-low hemline. This describes any garment that is significantly shorter in the front than it is in the back. Whether it’s a dress, a skirt, or a top, this style looks cute on all girls. Many of the stores at Santana Row are featuring this adorable look as it’s the perfect combination of flirty and classy for summer. Pink Stripes in Santana Row is a great store to try out the high-low hemline. With lots of styles and lots of colors, you can’t go wrong. See some of my favorite looks from Pink Stripes and other Santana Row retailers below!

Urban Outfitters: “Reverse Cutout High/Low Dress” - $79.00

BCBG: “Avery Crocodile-Print Asymmetrical Dress” - $198.00

Urban Outfitters: “Staring at Stars Double-Layer Chiffon High/Low Skirt” - $59.00

Gifts for Grads

It’s that time of year again! High school and college seniors are celebrating a huge milestone in their lives: graduation! High schoolers will be starting their college lives, and college kids will be moving into the “real world”. Help congratulation a graduate in your life by giving them a gift. Your grad will appreciate the sentiment whether the gift will help get them ready for the next chapter in their life or whether they can use the gift to just have fun!

Hands down, the best gift you can give a recent graduate is a Santana Row gift card. They might be into shopping for the latest fashions, dining at the most delicious restaurants, being pampered at the spas and salons, or decorating their upcoming living space. The Santana Row gift card can let them do any and all of those things! The card is good throughout Santana Row and can be purchased in the Santana Row Concierge or online at http://www.SantanaRow.com/Concierge/GiftCards.
The grad in your life is going to be getting countless cards, and if you want yours to stand out, make sure it is something special! MaiDo and Paper Source are both great places for unique graduation cards that will let your grad know how proud you are. (And just think how happy they will be when they open the card to find a Santana Row gift card inside!)
Still stumped? Here are some other ideas for a graduation gift that the grad in your life might enjoy:

The Travel Book” by Lonely Planet – Urban Outfitters: $30.00

The New iPad from Apple – Best Buy: Ranging in price from $499.99 - $829.99.

Large Duffel in Baroque” – Vera Bradley: $85.00

My Birthday List from the Row

As selfish as it may sound, my birthday is by far my favorite holiday.  It’s a great excuse to take a day off of work, school, and my normal life and allow myself to be spoiled.  Since my birthday is coming up, I have decided to make a list of the things I love from around the Row.  I usually don’t make a birthday wish list, but I have decided to do so this year so I can share it with you!  If you know someone with an upcoming birthday, they might like some of these gifts, too!

Anthropologie is a great store on the Row because not only do they have the cutest fashions for you, but they also have the most fun gifts for just about anyone you know. With a wide variety of accessories, home décor, and miscellaneous adorableness, Anthropologie is one of the best places on the Row to shop for gifts. My personal favorite thing from their store right now is the story book fragrances. With six different scents, each one from a different place in the world with a different travel story behind it, there is sure to be one for any birthday girl you know.  The scent I love is the yellow “1856 Darjeeling” because of its slightly citrus scent!

Anthropologie: “A Rather Novel Collection Eau De Parfum” - $48.00 each.

Pink Stripes is another great place to go for gifts.  Though it’s one of the smaller stores on Santana Row, it is chalk full of cuteness: adorable trends at reasonable prices, great makeup and accessories, and even candy for those birthday girls with a sweet tooth! For example, the dress below couldn’t be any more perfect for summer, and it’s only $62!

Pink Stripes: “Lace Peplum Dress” - $62.00

Another one of my favorite stores on Santana Row is Jest Jewels.  Walking into that store gives me the same feeling I used to get when I would walk into a candy store as a little girl.  This store has an unlimited supply of costume jewelry (which just happens to be one of my favorite things).  However, don’t be fooled by the term “costume” jewelry.  This isn’t jewelry that you would find in a Halloween box.  This is big, fun jewelry that makes a statement and sets you apart as an individual.  I am currently big on a trend I like to call “arm candy”, which is a cute way to say lots and lots of bracelets! I love the bangles below from Jest Jewels because they have a little bit of everything a girl could want: gold, silver, pearls, and diamonds!

Jest Jewels: “Bangles - Set of 11 Gold & Pearl” - $24.00

As a person who cares about the environment, I love 100% Pure.  Their store’s entire focus is on being natural, cruelty free, and as their name says, pure.  This means that their products are not only good for the environment and for animals, but they are good for you as well.  No chemicals or preservatives will ever touch their makeup or skincare, which means that none of that ever touches your skin.  One of the best parts about this store is that their products actually work.  Some may be wary about the richness of their colors or the effectiveness of their merchandise, but those things should not be of concern.  Because the colors are drawn straight from fruits and vegetables, they are vibrant and true, and I can say from personal experience that their line of products definitely works.  For my birthday, I am hoping for the “Fruit Pigmented Ginger Eye Shadow” because it is a beautiful, light color for summer and the “Blackberry Pigmented Gel Eyeliner” because it adds drama with a stunning purple black.

100% Pure: “Blackberry Pigmented Gel Eyeliner” - $18.00

100% Pure: “Fruit Pigmented Ginger Eye Shadow” - $15.00

Another gift that I would love to get for my birthday, or for any occasion for that matter, is the Santana Row gift card.  This gift card is good throughout Santana Row and can be used at our spas, salons, restaurants, shops, hotel, and even the movie theater.  With this gift card, I could do just about anything I want!

Earth Friendly Stores

On Santana Row, we are lucky to have multiple stores that are dedicated to bettering our planet. Some of our stores use only earth friendly materials when making their products, while other stores have incorporated clothing lines or practices that support the environment.

Santana Row’s newest store, Clary Sage Organics, is a store all about being green and educating its customers on the environmental impacts of what they purchase. The store centers around Clary Sage Organics clothing line, which is made from only sustainable and/or recycled textiles, such as a material that is created from a minimum of 6% recycled water bottles! There are other clothing lines in the store as well, such as Eden and Transit, which are also made solely from responsible materials. Clary Sage also features a “lotions + potions” section of the store, which has locally made organic supplements and face and body products. We are very pleased to have them as a part of the Santana Row family, and we stop by their store soon!

Another Santana Row store that is committed to being cruelty free (to both the earth and to animals) is 100% Pure Cosmetics. This cosmetic line is amazing because when they say they are 100% pure, they mean it! There are never any chemicals, toxins, preservatives, or unnatural ingredients in any of their products. Instead, when reading the ingredients lists, you see the names of fruits, vegetables, and other plants. The best part about this store is that their products actually work! Stop by their Santana Row location and let yourself be wowed by what they have to offer!

100% Pure: “FRUIT PIGMENTED PRETTY NAKED PALETTE” - $35.00

H&M has recently released a new clothing line called their “Conscious Collection”. These clothes are all made from organic materials, such as organic cotton, polyester made from recycled PET bottles, and Tencel, a material that recycles all chemicals required in production. This new line is inexpensive, adorable, earth-conscious, and available at H&M Santana Row! Here are a few pieces from the collection:

H&M: “Conscious Collection Dress” - $19.95

H&M: “Conscious Collection Blazer” - $49.95

H&M: ”Conscious Collection Shorts” - $24.95

Many of Santana Row’s restaurants offer vegetarian and even vegan options, but if you are a meat lover, a great way to support the environment while eating meat is by eating free range, organic meat. At Rosie McCann’s, they understand the importance of this. All of the beef at their restaurant is free-range, grass fed beef (and all of their vegetables are organic)! By making this a staple on their menu, this Santana Row restaurant has proven their commitment to the environment.

There are many ways to be friendly to the earth while shopping and dining at Santana Row. Reusable bags and coffee mugs are a great place to start, but see if you can take it a step further! Ask what sustainable options stores offer while shopping to minimize your impact on the environment. Remember: if you take care of the earth, the earth will be able to take care of us!

Cultural Mix Makes for Better Business Owning Experience at Santana Row

As I walked along Santana Row last week, the murmur of voices enveloped me like a fog.  I heard different languages and accents, which wove in and out of doorways and walkways like a familiar tune.  I caught myself consciously thinking about how the cultural mix adds so much to my experience as a business owner at Santana Row.

Like spices in a pot of soup, each culture brings a flavor to the environment I work in, and the people teach me so much about parts of the world I've never been to.

We have salon 'guests' (we call our customers guests because we like to treat them as such) from India, Russia, Vietnam, Japan, Korea, United Kingdom, Mexico, France, as well as points farther and closer.  I am so fortunate to have found a salon team that speaks many of the languages that our guests are fluent in.  Alejandra and Beatriz both speak Spanish, Masaya hails from Japan, Natalia and Anastasiya speak Russian and Ukrainian, Jaimee is from Korea, and the list goes on.  It's nice to know that for people who have difficulty with English, we can understand their desires when it comes to beauty.  I can't imagine being in a salon in a country where I don't speak the language well, trying to explain how I want my hair cut!

When I travel, I really notice the cultural mix in different areas of the U.S., and I miss the diversity of the Bay Area and the interesting points of view people bring to us.  I'm so grateful to live and work in the Bay Area--it's like being all over the world, without ever having to step on a plane!

Earth Month Tips

Everybody wants to be environmentally friendly, but it is often inconvenient to find ways to do so. What if there were easy, convenient “green” things to do that are also beneficial to you in some way? Here are some helpful, easy tips to get you to think green during Earth Month… all while helping you out!

When you need to go up a floor or two in a building, your first thought is probably to take the elevator. This month, try taking the stairs instead. Every time you do, you will be saving the energy that it would have taken to use the elevator. It seems simple, but you can be sure that small energy savings like these add up over time! Plus, you will get a head start on your exercising (even if it is a small amount)! So next time you are on your way to work or out at Club One in Santana Row, take the stairs to the third floor instead of the elevator and get a head start on your exercise!

If you live in San Jose, you know all about reusable bags. Now, if you don’t bring them to the grocery store, you have to pay extra! Reusing items doesn’t have to apply to just bags. There are many things in your everyday life that you can reuse. One of the most obvious of these is travelers coffee mugs. What you might not know is that using these mugs is beneficial to you! At both Starbucks and Peet’s at Santana Row, you receive $.10 off your drink when you bring in a reusable mug. This may not seem like a lot, but as with energy savings, it definitely adds up! Using traveler mugs saves the environment and your pocket, slowly but surely!

“Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.” You have definitely heard this term, but have you ever stopped to think about what these words mean? And have you ever heard that you are supposed to do those things in that order? To be as consumer conscious as possible, the most important thing to do is to first reduce your intake of new materials. The next step is to reuse items that you already have. Finally, after reducing and reusing, recycle instead of throwing away. By following these instructions, you will make an impact on the world you live in and on your own life!

Being respectful to Earth is important, and there are little ways you can achieve this in your everyday life. To find out more ways you can celebrate Earth Month at Santana Row, see our previous blog!

Spring Into A New Look

As the season changes from winter to spring, we find lots of reasons to spice up our look.  The pale skin of wintertime comes out of hiding and we start to feel ready to embrace new colors, sandals, flirty skirts, and of course, changes to our hair.  First consideration should be for the condition.  Is your hair dry and flyaway after being indoors in heated rooms?  Aveda's botanical hair treatments do more than just a home treatment.   These are professional salon-only treatments that penetrate, nourish, moisturize, and make dehydrated locks come back to life.

Next we focus on hair color. Whether it's a few subtle highlights around the face to add a nice glow to your skin or the richness of a warm brunette shade, I love to help my salon guests determine what works best with your skin tone and compliments your eye color.  This year it's either soft tones or the vibrant fashion shades, a' la Hunger Games: blue, pink, and strong primary tones in peek-a-boo pieces underneath.  If you're game, I can make it happen.  Now it's time to support your new color with a new haircut. Taking a face shape analysis helps me find the best cut to help contour and highlight features. Creating a new cut to flatter your best features is what a haircut is all about!  Every experience at Atelier is a relaxing one from the hand treatment to a wonderful long-lasting blowout. If you look good then you feel good, and that's why I love what I do, which is make Atelier's guests happy!

Be Inspired,

Lindsay Dreyer

Atelier Artist

Arm Candy

I can’t help it… I love candy. Sour candy, sweet candy, and of course, chocolate. But I obviously can’t be eating candy any time I want! So I have had to find something to replace my candy cravings, and I think I have found just the thing… Arm candy! If you have never heard this term before, it is referring to how fun you can have with your bracelets. Arm candy is definitely a safer way to get your fix for your daily sweet and sour!

Arm candy adds just the right amount of spunk to any outfit. Some bracelet trends that are especially big right now are friendship style bracelets, bangles, cuffs, and chunky metals. Wear them one at a time or wear them all together! Mix and match and don’t be afraid to get playful. And no matter what you do, don’t let your wrists go naked! Here are some examples of my favorite bracelets that are on the Row right now.

Urban Outfitters: “Egyptian Metal Cuff Bracelet” - $28.00

Urban Outfitters: “UO Stacking Bracelets” - $18.00

Anthropologie: “Geneva Round Watch” - $198.00

Chico’s: “Sylvea Bangle” - $45.00

Diesel: “1-ABRIN” - $98.00

For more arm candy, take a stroll down the Row and check out the great options our stores have. And again, don’t be afraid to have fun with it and express yourself through your arm candy!

Put Good In, Get Good Out!

Women are always chasing solutions on how to look and feel more beautiful. We buy the newest clothes, we dye our hair, and we use the most expensive products. But what if the solution is much more simple than we have made it out to be? Instead of trying to fix our problems on the outside, we should be focusing on how we treat our bodies inside. The better you are to the inside of your body, the better you will look and feel on the outside. Here are some helpful hints on how to get started on improving your life… from the inside out!

Exercise! As dreadful as this may sound to some, exercise can actually be fun. If you aren’t into running on the treadmill or lifting weights, going to the gym can sound daunting. The good news is that there are so many more ways to get you into shape these days. Try going outside and playing sports at the park. Take your dog on more walks or jogs. If you feel like you need a more structured approach to your work out, try a fitness class like yoga, zumba, or pilates. All of these classes are fun ways to make your body feel great, and they are all offered at Club One Santana Row and are included in your monthly membership. Exercise should be fun! Find something that is right for you and stick with it.

Eat your five-a-day! We’ve been hearing about the power of fruits and vegetables since we were children, so why don’t we actually eat them? Studies have proven that eating more fruits and vegetables instead of meat will make you healthier in general and improve the look of your skin. (Plus it’s better for the environment!) Olin Avenue Market sells fresh and delicious fruits and vegetables right in the heart of Santana Row. For a cheap, tasty, and healthy way to look and feel better, it’s as simple as listening to Mom and eating those veggies!

If all else fails, go to the spa! This may sound contradictory to my “from the inside out” theory, but it’s actually not! No one ever has enough hours in the day to get done what they need and want to do. This can become very stressful. By spending some of that precious time doing something nice for yourself, you can alleviate that stress and calm your mind and your muscles. Santana Row spas are always on hand to assist in your relaxation needs. Burke Williams, InSpa, and Club One are all top-of-the-line spas ready to get you feeling great (inside and out)!

However you decide to get healthy, Santana Row has got your back!

Color Me Trendy!

Lime, coral, cobalt, fuchsia… You don’t have to choose between your favorite colors anymore! Who says you can’t wear them all at the same time? The last few blog posts have been leading up to this one: Color is IN! Prints are looking their best when colored in, stripes are cutest in vibrant hues, and blocks of color are making a comeback like never before. So tomorrow when you get dressed, be adventurous! Put two articles on that you have never worn together before. Pink pants and a yellow shirt? Sure! Orange skirt with blue accessories? Go for it! When asking yourself “Why would I?”, ask yourself instead: “Why would I not?” After all, what is fashion if not fun?

With so many fun colors out there, I can’t blame you if you’re a little overwhelmed by your options. If you need some help, take a look at a few of the cute outfits the Row currently has to offer.

How adorable is this playful look from the Loft? Featuring the “Cotton Trench Coat” for $148 in Picnic Orange, it’s the perfect combination of lots of color and mixing fun patterns!

If you’re like me, you would probably be way too scared to try a look like this. Who can mix a bunch of different blues and make it work? This delightful outfit from the Loft just goes to show that there’s nothing to fear with mixing colors and trying something unexpected. You never know what kind of magic you can create with colors! Loft: “Asymmetrical Military Pique Jacket” - $128.

This dress from Pink Stripes is a great starting point at just $52 for a flirty, colorful outfit. Just add different colored accessories (like a bag or bangles) or shoes to make this “Vanessa Hi-Lo Dress” really stand out!

Anthropologie’s “Second Strand Watch” is a bright, now-and-today twist on a classic watch for only $198. (It also comes in purple!)

Urban Outfitters: “BDG Cigarette High-Rise Jean – Persimmon” - $58.00 (Wouldn’t the belt below be charming with these pants?)

I can’t stop thinking of all the things this belt could go with. This yellow bow would make just about anything even cuter! Anthropologie: “Belle Bow Belt” - $38.00

Wrap Yourself in Stripes

Stripes have been a staple in our wardrobes for countless years, but now more than ever stripes are a must! Santana Row is buzzing with this new fashion because it’s so easy to wear and makes such a bold statement. The best part about stripes is the way you can slap them on just about any current fashion trend to make it ever trendier! Plus, stripes come in many varieties. Thick or thin, a lot or a little, bright or pastel… the possibilities are endless! Our favorite thing to do with stripes is pair them with other stripes! It’s mixing patterns at its easiest. (Just don’t get too stripe crazy!)

Below are some of our favorite striped looks from around the Row. Let Santana Row help you get your stripe on!

Loft: “Sheer Metallic Colorblock Stripe Sweater” - $59.50.

Urban Outfitters: “Cooperative Striped Bodycon Dress” - $59.

Ted Baker: “HONOR – Striped Dress” - $255.

Loft: “Blocked Pinstripe Infinity Loop” - $34.50.

Anthropologie: “Ruffled Horizons Pullover” - $88.00.

Anthropologie: “Zagged Stripes Skirt” - $98.00.

Pink Stripes: “Bright Stripe Cardi” - $68.

Trends From New York Fashion Week

New York Fashion Week is a wrap and now we want to know the trends! Here are just a few!

Brazen Belts-Burberry pictured below.

Hats-So you're not a hat person? Smooth down your hair because if the designers at Fashion Week have anything to do with it, that's about to change.

Black & Blue
The "it" color combo of the season is most definitely all about black and navy blue.

Winter White-we are more than okay with forgetting this one-time fashion faux pas.

Print it Loud!

Designers are just as excited for spring as we are, and they’re showing it by printing everything with bold colors and bright florals! These days, it’s just about impossible to go into a store without seeing big, beautiful prints. What better time to celebrate spring than when the fashions for it are at their peak? This season, whether your print is subtle or vibrant, don’t be afraid of big prints! They are large, loud, and perfectly in fashion.

Below are some of my favorite printed pieces from all over the Row. If you don’t love any of these, don’t worry! There are a ton more great pieces here at Santana Row that are just waiting for you to take them home!

Anthropologie: “Bursting Sweetshade Dress” - $188.

Vera Bradley: “Laptop Portfolio in Island Blooms” - $82. (Vera Bradley’s whole business is based on bright floral patterns. Everything from purses and luggage to reading glasses and notepaper is printed with a wide assortment of colors and flowers. Check them out here at Santana Row!)

Chico’s: “Tribal Blues Gloria Tank” - $59.00

Anthropologie: “Paused Movements Skirt” - $128.

Loft: “Bubble Dot Print Flutter Shell” - $54.50 (How cute it this top with this skirt?)

Forget spring! Are you already waiting for summer? I know I am! This year, don’t be afraid to go bold with beachwear. Pastels and monotones are out… Prints are in!

Tommy Bahama: “Banana Leaf Embellished Tunic” - $126.

Ted Baker: “CALIOP” (top) - $65.

Ted Baker: “ERIO” (bottom) - $65

The Chunkier, the Better!

And no, I’m not talking about soup! I’m talking about sweaters, of course! Women of all ages look great in chunky, relaxed sweaters (which is even better because they are so in style right now). My favorite part about this look is how effortless it is to pull off. Just pair your sweater with skinny jeans and cute boots, or a bodycon skirt and tights, and you’ll look the part of a true fashionista. Santana Row has a great selection of chunky sweaters for you to choose from, whether you are looking for one a little more sophisticated or are just in the market for a cute and comfy sweater! Below are some of my favorite chunky sweaters from around the Row. (It was so hard to choose my favorites because there are so many great ones!) Enjoy!

Urban Outfitters: “Staring at Stars Mixed Stitch Cardigan” - $49.99

Free People: “Laguna Coast Pullover” - $98.00

Urban Outfitters: “Pins and Needles Open Stitch Pocket Pullover” – $49.00

Anthropologie: “Sporadic Stitchery Pullover” - $98.00

Diesel: “M-Kasumi” - $98.00

Chico’s: “Cool Crochet Knit Poncho” - $119.00

No Resolution? No Problem!

Instead of making a New Year’s Resolution that I am not going to keep, this year I have decided to just not make one!  Maybe you are like me and have decided to not bother.  But just because we haven’t made a resolution doesn’t mean that we can’t start the year off right!  There are lots of places at Santana Row that can help you get a positive jumpstart to your 2012.

Maybe all you need is a day at the spa to clear your head and get you in the mood to make the most of your New Year.  At Santana Row, we have several places that can help you accomplish just that.  Burke Williams is famous for their excellent services and day spa.  InSpa is known for offering good services for their competitive prices.  Even Club One at Santana Row has a spa that offers great massages (which is even better after a great workout)!

Maybe what you really need in this New Year is a new style. Whether that comes from a fabulous new haircut or a few additions to the wardrobe, Santana Row is here to help! Sometimes the best way to rejuvenate yourself is to be spontaneous and try something new. Atelier Aveda Spa and Salon is a great place for a brand new cut and color. Or, let yourself splurge a little and buy some new pieces that make you feel great. When you feel great, others notice!

Organization can play a big role in refreshing your life. When your space is organized, so is your mind! The Container Store knows this, and is therefore offering 30% off of all elfa products until February 13th. elfa is a line of products designed to get your maximize your closet space, all while being the utmost organized! The elfa team at The Container Store will design you a new closet and give you 30% off of all products and installation! New Year, new closet! There is no better time than now to get your closet looking its best!

If none of these things sound like they will give you the kick start you need, there is always one sure way to brighten your mood and get you back in the game. Spending a little more time with those you love reminds you to focus on what is truly important in life. Come out to Santana Row for a fun night with friends, a romantic date night, or an afternoon out with family. With over 70 shops, 20 restaurants, 9 salons and spas, and the CineArts Theatre, Santana Row is the best place to rekindle relationships with the most important people in your life.

No matter how you choose to start your year, do something that will make you happy! We hope you have a great 2012!

Antioxidants Can Be Found In The Most Unlikely Places

You've heard the word buzzing around: antioxidants.  What are they, and why are they important to you?

Wikipedia's definition. in part, is: An antioxidant is a molecule capable of inhibiting the oxidation of other molecules. Oxidation reactions can produce free radicals. In turn, these radicals can start chain reactions in a cell, which can cause damage or death to the cell.

And that's not good for you.  And damage to a cell can create conditions like premature wrinkling of the skin, or lead to cancer and heart disease.

While antioxidants can be found in some of the foods we consume, such as whole grains, fruits, coffee, red wine, and green tea, they are being used more often in the products we use on the outsides of our bodies as well.

Aveda products have included antioxidant extracts in their skin, hair, and makeup products for years.  The idea being that what goes on the outside of your skin makes its way into your insides.  Take lipstick, for instance.  The average woman winds up ingesting quite a few tubes of lipstick over the course of a year, just by licking her lips, or eating a meal while wearing lipstick.  So it makes good sense to make a lipstick out of ingredients that are good for you.

Those beneficial ingredients include: Vitamins C and E, green tea, and lycopene (tomato extract) among others.  Another benefit of using antioxidants in makeup is their ability to act as a natural preservative, eliminating the need for chemicals.

Aveda's styling products also contain antioxidants to protect the hair's surface from the harmful effects of heat styling and even the rays of the sun.

All which add up to some darn good reasons to seek out antioxidants wherever you can find them.  And it looks like they are easy to find if you know where to look.

Atelier Salonspa is located on the main street of Santana Row, near the corner of Olsen Dr.  Our second salon, Atelier Studio, is having a major makeover, and will reopen in late January.  Atelier offers hair, skin, and makeup services 7 days a week.

Last Minute Gift Ideas

Procrastination doesn’t end when you graduate from school, and the holidays are a perfect reminder of that.  If you are still unsure of what to get someone (or everyone) on your list, don’t worry!  Santana Row is the one-stop-shop place to find all of your holiday gifts. Whether the gifts are big or small, for men or women, for friends or loved ones, let us help you take some of the stress out of your holidays.

Here are some of my favorite gift ideas from around the Row for women:

Peet’s Coffee & Tea always has gift sets that are already prepared and are great for just about anyone, like the one below. After all, what woman doesn’t love chocolate? For a loved one or for someone you’ve just met, play it safe by getting her this Hot Cocoa Gift set from Peet’s! It includes the Dutch Cocoa mix, delicious marshmallows, and an adorable mug.

$21.95

Anthropologie is a great place for gifts for women and gifts for the home. From beautiful dresses to unique kitchenware to decadent candles, this store has it all. One of my favorite items currently in the store is their perfume collection called “A Rather Novel Collection”. The six perfumes are each created by a different perfumer and are inspired by different parts of the world. And what’s the best part? They all smell amazing! And because they all have different notes, one of them is bound to be just right for a woman in your life.

$48.00 each

Jest Jewels has accessories are both beautiful and unconventional at the same time… Perfect for that whimsical person in your life! Like Betsey Johnson’s “In the Navy Anchor” ring. So cute!

$45.00

We all know that men are trickier to shop for than women, so hopefully this will give you some ideas!

If your dad is like mine and is a little behind the technological times, maybe it’s time to get him on board. An iPod is a great way to do this. This way, he can have convenient access to all his favorite music, and it will be fun for you to bond over setting it up. Plus, Best Buy is offering a $30 gift card when you purchase an 8GB iPod Touch! (Feel free to keep that for yourself for being such a great gift giver!)

Best Buy: Apple iPod Touch 8GB - $199.99

Instead of getting the man in your life clothes this year… Oh, who are we kidding? Of course we’re going to get him clothes! It’s his fault for being impossible to shop for. At least Santana Row has lots of stores that will make him look and feel great in his new clothes. This jacket from Orvis is perfect for looking handsome while staying warm on those casual days out.

$399.00

Do you have a man in your life who loves cars? This wallet from Hlaska was actually made in conjunction with another store on Santana Row – Tesla. Can you guess why? The design on the wallet is actually the same tread design on Tesla tires. And since it’s made by Hlaska, you know it’s going to last.

$125.00

If you’re still unsure about what to get someone on your list, you can’t go wrong with the Santana Row Gift Card. This card is good at all Santana Row locations (stores, restaurants, spas and salons, the movie theater…) and since it’s so versatile, it’s the perfect gift for anyone! Some terms and exclusions apply. Cards may be purchased online at http://www.santanarow.com/concierge/giftcards/ or in the Santana Row Concierge.

Happy Holidays, and happy shopping!

Stress-Free Air Travel Tips from The Container Store

Headed home for the holidays?  To ensure a streamlined security checkpoint experience, and to make the most of available packing space, we offer the following tips for becoming an organized air traveler.

Plan ahead

Make a list of the things you need to pack, making sure you’re only taking along what you will absolutely need in order to reduce the number of bags you’ll need to take. Once you’re packed and ready to go, allow yourself ample time to get to the airport, taking into consideration such factors as traffic, weather and time of day. By arriving at the airport early, you can avoid the feeling of being rushed as you pass through security and will allow plenty of time to board the plane. Check with your airline or airport for estimates wait times at the security checkpoints. If checking bags, you may need to arrive earlier.

Don’t Wrap Gifts

Don’t wrap any gifts before your trip — they may be unwrapped by Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agents at the security checkpoint. Instead, wrap them after you arrive or pack a gift tote and tissue that you can easily assemble once you get to your destination.

Organize your Identification

You will be asked to provide government-issued photo identification at various checkpoints throughout the airport. In addition, passengers are required to provide proof of travel, including a boarding pass, or printed confirmation of an e-ticket. Keep all of these items organized and quickly accessible.

Pack Smart

TSA guidelines limit carry-on baggage to one bag plus one personal item (i.e. purse, briefcase, laptop or backpack.) Some airlines have recently leveraged fees for checking bags or for checking more than one bag. Use a clothing compression system like the Pack-It System to make the most of the space. These items will also help expedite the security process, allowing security personnel to lift and sort through clothing, toiletries and shoes quickly and easily. The see-through mesh side panels allow for quick identification of the contents. Because garments are neatly folded and secured, putting items back into your luggage after passing through security is a snap.

Carry On

Don’t forget about TSA guidelines that require liquids, gels and aerosols that you want to carry on the plane be in three-ounce or smaller containers and in a one-quart, zip-top bag. It’s imperative to put shampoo, lotion, hair gel, toothpaste mouthwash and other liquids in guaranteed leakproof bottles to prevent spills. Visit www.tsa.gov for more details about these restrictions.

Stocking Stuffers

Some of the quirkiest gift and the best come in little packages that aren’t necessarily under the tree, but instead you’re stocking! As the holiday cheer is already here, it’s time to start finding those little nick knack that fit each loved ones personality perfectly. That is as long as they landed on the nice list this year and not the naughty, as we all know those ones may be stuffed coal!

Q and A with Atelier

Jon asks: I need some grooming advice. I have little knowledge and even less patience when it comes to my hair. What is the quickest way to look great without breaking my budget?

Atelier's answer:  Jon, We're big fans of getting more for our money, and you probably are too.  See an experienced stylist for a good cut (precision cuts last longer) and take advantage of their knowledge by asking them for a styling lesson.  This is valuable one-on-one time that will really give you the step-by-step on how to look your best.  Salon products stretch your dollar because you use less to get a better look.  Call and set up an appointment, like you would with your dentist--you'll have a better selection of appointment times and stylists.

We look forward to seeing you at Atelier soon!

Clear the Clutter Before the Holidays

'Tis the season to get organized!  Whether you’re hosting a family get-together or simply need to plan for all the toys, clothing and gifts your family will receive, there’s no better way to relieve the stress of the holiday season than by getting your home organized.

  • Identify spaces in your home that are the most often-used during the holidays, and tackle those areas first. For example, you might choose the family room, kitchen or the kids' closets. Don’t forget the area where you’re storing your gifts and planning your holiday wrapping!
  • For each space, commit to removing as many non-used items as possible. Donate or discard items not worn or used in two years. Clearing the space of items no longer needed is imperative to staying organized!
  • If you identify items that are better stored elsewhere in your home when cleaning house, relocate them. Golf bags stored in the closet? Move them to the garage. However don’t be tempted to start on another area until the first one is complete.
  • Create a plan to accommodate holiday gifts. How bulky are the kids' new toys going to be? How much hanging space do you need for your new articles of clothing?
  • Think about how your spaces will function when the holidays arrive. How much countertop space will you need in the kitchen for baking/cooking needs? Are your holiday dishes and glassware clean and easily accessible?
  • Shop for organization solutions that will help contain the items that are staying in the space, as well as consider storage for new items you expect to receive.
  • Group like items together. For example, in the kitchen, keep your baking supplies stored in a basket that you can remove from the pantry when it’s time to make your holiday cookies. Or, in the kid’s room, keep art and craft project supplies all in one place.
