ATELIER AVEDA Blog Entry: I received a gift today.
The day-to-day life of a salon owner is filled with details, ideas, firefighting, and challenges. Today was a great day, because I received a wonderful gift. One that I wish I got more often. I think every business owner would love to receive this gift everyday.
I was behind the chair, cutting hair, and a salon guest came up to me and said, “I just wanted to tell you what a wonderful salon you’ve created. Lan cuts my hair and she is always so upbeat and does such a terrific job on my hair, but she also creates such great energy. And Brittany, your Prote’ge’, gives the best scalp and hand treatment, the hair washing is heavenly, and she is always right there to make sure I have fresh tea or purified water. And Beatriz, your shoppekeeper, I was watching her today, she takes such pride in keeping everything sparkling clean, with a smile, and seems so happy to be here. I complimented Beatriz on what I saw, and she told me that she just wants to be sure my experience here is great. Everyone is smiling, and that is contagious! And the important part, Karie, is that it all comes from the owner. I see you interact with your employees with such love and respect and they speak so highly of you and love working here.”
Wow–-well, I felt such gratitude flood over me, thanked her profusely for telling me this, and it almost brought me to tears. I think the world of this team that puts so much effort forth not only for me or the salon, but for the guest. It was truly the best gift I’ve gotten in a long time.
It makes a difference. Please, remember to give praise as often as you can. Let the boss know when you have a great experience, or come across a terrific employee. Sometimes we get too caught up in our feedback, which is certainly useful, but also need to compliment, just to balance it out.
In any case, I’ve made a huge batch of chocolate chip cookies with a thank you note for my team. They deserve to hear the compliments too.
