Fashion Week is in full swing in New York and American designers have given us an early peek at what we might expect next fall. That’s right, we’re watching the runways for a glimpse of what’s coming in the autumn of 2009. Spring clothes may be what we see in stores right now—and certainly what we’re longing to wear as we wait out the rain in Silicon Valley. But here in New York, editors, retailers and stylists are trying to figure out what will excite fashionistas six months from now.
It could be the capes and statement coats, looks that have been endorsed by many designers already, including Tracy Reese and Thakoon, a label worn by First Lady Michelle Obama. Are women ready for the comeback of strong shoulders and a trip back to the 1980s? If Marc Jacobs says so, yes, we better be. The most influential of American designers, Jacobs’ models hit the catwalk Monday night in oversized cardigans, neon car coats and punk suit looks that had one detail in common: boulder-sized shoulder pads.
