Key Components of a Great Makeover
What is it about makeovers that we love? There are so many television shows and magazine articles that feature makeovers, and even the classic Cinderella story is really a great image update at its heart.
For me, I love to fix things, make improvements, and flex my creative muscle. But mainly I love to see people happy and feeling great about how they present themselves to the world. When a client looks in the mirror and says, “Wow! I love it!” It’s like a light shines down from the sky and the angels sing. I love that feeling.
The key components of a great makeover are:
1. A very large mental library of haircut and color combinations on the part of the stylist-this comes with education and experience.
2. Flexibility and a desire to make a positive change on the part of the client-maybe there’s a special occasion or just a need for a change.
3. Clear communication between the two. I love photos-whether they are still in the frame old photos of hairstyles past or magazine photos of celebrity styles. Anything that helps me understand where the client’s limits are make my job easier.
We have common goals—to bring about a fantastic transformation. Will it get you a new job? Maybe, if you need a more polished, professional look. Will it get you love and romance? Maybe, if your hairstyle isn’t presenting who you really are and is sending mixed messages. Will it win you the lottery?
...There’s only so much a hairstyle can do! Young, hip, and sexy are the 3 keywords I think of when I’m working on one of my clients. A woman of any age can certainly feel more confident, and look her best with the right cut and color. No matter how fabulous the fashion, or how flawless the makeup, the look won’t come together if the hair isn’t right. What other accessory are you going to buy that you’re going to wear every day for six weeks except your hair? It’s critical that we factor in what the hair wants to do vs. what we want it to do.
Then, and only then, do I even touch my scissors. So, open your mind to fabulous possibilities! Once you have the look you love it’s just a matter of maintenance…until the next need for change strikes!
