Mom’s Night Out

What started off as a desire to just get out and see some movies has turned into an evening of great conversation, mommy bonding and intense movie euphoria. This year,  2008 I decided to start a “Movie Moms Night Out @ The Row”.  For years I have been invited to join book clubs, and with two small children I haven’t the time to read the book or make my way to the book club gathering. But it is all about prioritizing, right? Maybe I want to read books on my own schedule and not be forced to finish a book that from the beginning would be a better table ornament on my nightstand. So how does this bring me to a movie club? I have always loved movies. I love the blockbuster to the independent, but with the little people in my life consuming many of my waking hours I never have time to make it to the theater. Occasionally my husband and I would sneak away for a date-night and we always choose the movies, but often we made excuses as to what other things we could be doing or getting done rather than sitting in a theater for two plus hours.

In 2008 I turn 40. Always at these pivotal points in my life I become introspective and try to find ways that I can feel more complete and self fulfilled. There are many ways to get side tracked and not do things for your self and I find that I often put others before my own interests. And I thought what do I love to do but is a PURE luxury and not at the top of the priority list? Going to the movies. 2008 is a great way to begin this chapter because the movie line-up for this end of year holiday release is targeted to be one of the best in years. There are so many movies I want to see. So begins the first Evite out to my network asking, “If you love movies, join me for a movie night at The Row…” We will chat about the movie, and meet either before or after for a little food and drink and get some time out of the house. We will see who responds. It may just be me, a bag of popcorn and a cool new movie. That’s when you know you really love something, and especially when you are willing to do it alone. Right?
