Mother’s Day Gift Ideas
The annual day to celebrate mothers is this Sunday and if you’re like me, you’re still waiting for inspiration to hit on the gift-giving front. Flowers? Jewelry? Brunch? All three? In this era of austerity, moms will be making do with less extravagant gifts this year if a recent poll proves right.
The National Retail Federation’s 2009 Mother’s Day survey of consumer actions and intentions found Americans will spend an average of $123.89 per adult, compared to last year’s $138.63. Of the four in five Americans who will celebrate Mother’s Day, the majority will focus on their mother, stepmother or wife while scaling back on gifts for daughters, friends and godmothers in an effort to save money.
Flowers and taking mom out for a nice meal topped the list of gifts this year. But moms will also be given jewelry, gift cards, clothing or accessories and personal services such as a day at the spa.
Not-so-traditional gifts will be bought, too, the survey said: TVs, iPods, computers, housewares, gardening tools, books and CDS are also on the list.
Here are five stylish Mother’s Day gift-giving ideas for us to consider:
1. Don’t just send flowers, take your mom to view flowers in a setting known for pretty blooms. Add brunch on the way to or from the floral viewing.
2. Once inspired by the flowers, take her shopping for something floral to add to her summer wardrobe.
3. Give her a certificate for pamper day at a spa, or, if that’s too extravagant, a manicure or pedicure, which is affordable. Make it a treat for you, too, by offering to keep her company while the two of you get your nails or toes done.
4. Gift cards may seem impersonal but not if you tailor it to her by giving her one from a favorite store that you know she frequents. Offer to shop there with her.
5. Propose a shopping outing that includes lunch or dinner and her pick of a gift on date later this month. You’ll avoid the rush on Mother’s Day, she’ll have something to look forward to and you buy yourself more time!
