Tips for healthy, younger looking skin from the inside

The sun is starting to shine (or at least we’re ready for it to!). We all want a gorgeous glow and healthy-looking skin on the outside, but here are a few tips for healthy, younger looking skin from the inside:

1.  Water

*  Our skin is our largest organ and is made up of at least 70% water.  Water helps to moisturize the skin from the inside out.  This helps to keep the cells plump and elastic.  This in turn helps to reduce wrinkles, and fight the look of aging.

*  How much?  Ideally it would be to take your weight and divide it by two.  That would equal how many ounces per day to strive for.

2.  Omega 3’s (EFAs)

*  Omega 3’s are anti-inflammatory and moisturizing, which helps with dry skin conditions such as dermatitis, psoriasis and eczema.

*  Cells receiving omega 3’s are found to be more resistant to UV damage and wrinkles. (Jrnl of Lipid Research, 2005)

*  Omega 3’s also boost the production of collagen and elastin which are needed to keep the skin moist and young looking.

*  Sources include: cold water fish (salmon, mackerel), avocados, walnuts, flaxseed oil and fish oil.

3.  Antioxidants: ACESZ  and B Vitamins

*  Antioxidants help to fight free radicals. Free radicals destroy collagen and elastin, causing wrinkles and signs of aging.

*  Vitamin C: citrus fruits and vegetables: bell peppers, broccoli, cauliflower and leafy greens.  Or supplement with 500 to 1,000 mg per day.

*  Vitamin E: vegetable oils, nuts, seeds, olives, spinach and asparagus.  Or supplement with 400 IU’s per day.  Natural, not synthetic.

*  Vitamin B complex: biotin most important because it forms the basis of skin, nail and hair cells.

*  Sources: bananas, eggs, oatmeal and rice.
