Tips to Finding Value for your Dining Dollar
Just because we’re tight on cash these days doesn’t mean we need, or should have to, skimp on quantity or quality! There are a lot of restaurants who have added value driven specials to their menus but you just have to know how to find them. The number one quick and easy tool at your disposal is their website. Aside from simply viewing the ‘Menu’ look for an ‘Events or Specials’ link, this is where the most current and usually best deals are noted. You could find offers such as an Inexpensive Buffets, Promotionally Priced Coursed Meals or even Happy Hour Specials. If there is a place you typically frequent sign up for their mailing list too (if they have one). All of these events are sent to this customer base as soon as they are available and more often than not have added incentives that are only offered to these customers.
The second best tool you have is the menu. Since most people on average only read the first 25% of a menu in a menu box or online, restaurants put their highest value, lowest cost, offers towards the top or in a highlighted box hoping to entice you in. The rest of the menu is usually pretty standard to their regular pricing, whatever that may be. If there are no specials noted on the menu then always ask your server. Servers get busy and often they might not mention the specials, if any, for the day but they will almost always describe them once asked.
For dining out, a good way to keep cost low is to bring your own wine. There is usually always a corkage fee which varies from place to place but is anywhere from $10-$25 per bottle. A good alternative to this which a lot of places offer but might not advertise is a ‘Bring a Bottle, Buy a Bottle’ program in which corkage is waived on every bottle you buy when you match it with an in house purchase (I would call ahead of time and ask to speak to a manager to discuss). This way your at least getting something for your dollar plus you get to drink a lot more
