Warm weather, where are you?

“Transitional” often refers to the clothes we wear between seasons. But here it is almost summer, and we’re having to dress as if it’s fall in Silicon Valley. While our climate is pretty moderate year-round, we still want to make a shift in our closets that reflect the true season.  Still, it seems silly—and too chilly—to wear a backless maxi sundresses when evening temperatures have been hovering in the mid-50s. There are ways, though, to infuse the feel of summer into your wardrobe while we wait for warmer weather.

  * Think in terms of pieces. A lightweight skirt might seem too bare paired with just a tank or tee, but try it with a fitted jean jacket for a sporty, hip silhouette. If you’re going for a more conservative look, throw a summerweight sweater over
your shoulders.

  * Wear bright accessories in pastels and citrus shades or neutrals. Switch your black handbag for a taupe one. It might be too cool for shorts, but you can still wear your orange sandals with jeans.

  * Long, wrap-around-your-neck gypsy scarves in cotton and silk/linen/cotton blends go a long way in keeping you warm and adding a pop of color. Stash one in your bag: around here, a sizzle of a day can quickly turn into a nippy night.

  * Neutral shades of sand, eggshell and khaki are heavily endorsed this summer and work perfectly as key staples. When it’s cool outside, wear them with darker shades, like fuchsia. When it’s hot, add white for a crisp, cool effect.

  * Denim skirts have made a comeback. Choose a mini (not too short!) or a pencil skirt for the most versatility. Wear gladiators or flats with the mini; heels with the pencil skirt. For those who dare, the cage-style stilettos look most fashion-forward.

  * The maxi dress, alas, should wait for balmy temps.
