What is Deep Tissue Massage?
Deep tissue massage uses similar strokes to Swedish massage. While Swedish is a very surface oriented style; deep tissue aims for the deeper muscles and connective tissue, often referred to as fascia. Many of the techniques are similar to Swedish, however, the pressure will tend to be more intense and focused. Therapists specializing in Deep Tissue focus on releasing chronic muscle tension and knots.
While deep tissue shouldn’t hurt, it will definitely be slight uncomfortable compared to a Swedish massage. As mentioned in a previous post; don’t be afraid to tell your therapist if they are pressing too hard.
Many clients feel the deeper the pressure the faster the results. This is an unrealistic expectation. Releasing chronic knots and tension accumulated over a long period of time is best achieved when an integrated program including exercise, postural awareness, relaxation/meditation techniques, and a regular massage program are combined to achieve total body wellness.
