What is Sports Massage?

Sports massage is a Western based style with roots in Swedish Massage.  Sports Massage helps athletes prepare for optimal performance, recover after an event, and maximize training results.  Sports massage can be beneficial to those with injuries, chronic pain, and/or restricted range of motion.

In essence there are four major types of sports massage;

  • Pre-Event is classified as anywhere from 15 mins - 45 mins before an event and focused on the muscles that will be utilized.
  • Post-Event is done within 1-2 hours after the event to balance the tissues.
  • Restorative is performed during training. It allows harder training with a goal of reducing injury and shortening recovery time.
  • Rehabilitative helps the body recovery from injury and imbalance returning the body to high performance.

Sports massage can be received in a spa setting and is generally used to recover from injuries and chronic issues.

Ultimately, let your therapist know what you want out of your session, and they will tailor the session to your needs…
