What’s a Knot?

As a therapist we hear that question a lot!  This is a very basic description of what creates a knot…

When the muscle contracts, cells called proprioceptors tell the brain that the muscle is contracted.  From  here, the proprioceptors go on cruise control and continue to contract the muscle.  The brain doesn’t tell them to stop, and they usually stop on their own UNLESS our posture or imbalances cause our muscles to contract all the time.  It’s at this time they go on cruise control and keep the muscle contracted even if we want them to stop.

So how does massage help?

Massage Therapists work with the muscle to interrupt the communication between the proprioceptors and the brain.  When the signal telling the brain that the muscle is contracting is interrupted, the proprioceptors turn off and the muscle relaxes.

If you want or need more information on this, just ask your therapist or post your question here…I try to keep an eye on the goings on here…

Thanks for reading!!
